Expected Shortlisting Date: 28/02/2025
Planned Interview Date: 28/03/2025
The dermatology surgical Nurse Practitioner (NP) team is a small but critical component of the Leeds Dermatology department at Chapel Allerton and St. James's hospitals. We are looking for 2 diligent, motivated, aspiring and adaptable Band 6 nurses to complete our team and help us deliver the many dimensions of our Nurse Practitioner service.
Our team coordinates and provides skin cancer telephone assessment (Direct to Surgery (DTS)) clinics, two-week-wait face-to-face skin cancer clinics, melanoma assessment and diagnosis clinics, minor skin surgery procedures, and wound review clinics. The successful candidates will be trained to undertake each aspect of these duties with the objective, in time being to undertake these either independently or under consultant or senior nurse supervision.
You will be fully supported in your training towards developing the necessary skills required for this role both by your NP colleagues and the wider dermatology team. Our team currently comprises the following personnel:
* B8 Advanced Clinical Practitioner (team development lead)
* B7 Clinical Specialist Practitioner (team manager)
* B6 Nurse Practitioners x 3.5
* B3 Senior CSW
We work within a larger, very experienced dermatology outpatient department and together we support the Consultant team in managing an ever-growing and challenging skin cancer service.
Main duties of the job
Skin cancer pressures are higher than ever; however, this is an exciting time for nurse progression and it provides us with the opportunity to showcase the profession in a way that provides high levels of job satisfaction whilst really making a difference to patient care. We very much look forward to welcoming a similarly driven nurse into our team to develop this new role and support our current and expanding commitment.
The successful candidates will be trained to undertake and/or participate in some or all of the following activities:
* Skin cancer telephone assessment (Direct to Surgery (DTS)) clinics
* Face-to-face two-week-wait lesion/skin cancer assessment clinics
* Minor skin surgical procedures (sampling and/or removal of skin lesions for histological assessment)
* Wound review clinics
* Melanoma assessment and diagnosis delivery clinics
* Results management sessions/clinics
* Regular skin cancer multidisciplinary team meetings
The successful candidates will follow a development pathway in each of these components of the NP role at a mutually agreed pace. Training and support will be provided both from within the NP team and from the wider dermatology team. The objective, in time, will be that the successful candidate will undertake their role either independently or under consultant or senior nurse supervision.
There are many dimensions to this role and as such it is crucial that any interested parties contact us for more information before applying.
About us
The Leeds Dermatology department delivers a wide range of expert services such as Mohs micrographic surgery, minor skin surgery, laser treatment, melanoma management, amongst many others, and the surgical NP team is often the first and ongoing point of contact for many of our skin cancer patients. Our small team currently undertakes much of the initial assessment and diagnostic surgical procedures, and the growing number of skin cancer referrals is driving the need to enlarge our team to better and more efficiently manage this workload.
Leeds Teaching Hospitals is committed to our process of redeploying 'at risk' members of our existing workforce to new roles. As such, all our job adverts are subject to this policy and we reserve the right to close, delay or remove adverts while this process is completed. If you do experience a delay in the shortlisting stage of the recruitment cycle, please bear with us while this process is completed, and contact the named contact if you have any questions.
