A Bookkeeping and Accounting Apprenticeship role at Moore is an excellent starting point for a career in accountancy. You’ll combine studying for an internationally recognised accounting qualification, an Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Apprenticeship, with hands-on experience, supporting our Business Support department to deliver a range of services to our clients, including bookkeeping, VAT, management accounting and accounting software support.
SUPPORTING YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
An AAT apprenticeship is typically a three-year programme, combining study with practical, on-the-job training and we’ll give you all the support you need to realise your full potential.
You will be part of a great team working with, and being trained by colleagues of all levels, right up to senior management. Our supportive environment and commitment to providing first-class training and development means everyone is always happy to answer any questions you may have.
THE FIRST YEAR
1. You’ll start by learning the basics through an online bookkeeping course including the difference between debits and credits, sales and purchase, basic VAT rules and lots more.
2. You will be assigned a Buddy who will be on hand to answer any questions and provide on-the-job training to support your academic learning.
3. You’ll have a personal development plan in place from Day One, providing step by step guidance on what’s needed to progress to the next level in your career journey.
4. You’ll learn how to use a variety of different accounting software systems including Sage, QuickBooks and Xero.
YEARS TWO AND THREE
1. By the start of your second year, you’ll begin to provide accounting software support to our varied client base.
2. As your bookkeeping knowledge expands, you’ll process a range of financial information for clients, from their bank statements, suppliers and customers invoices.
3. You will work closely with other departments within the Firm including tax, payroll and accounts.
4. You will build relationships with clients through communicating with them regularly by requesting information along with answering queries.
5. You’ll learn how to prepare VAT returns ensuring they are filed accurately and on time.
6. You will also learn how to draft a set of year-end accounts and have the opportunity to sit in client meetings so you can understand how your work is vital to their business.
7. As your knowledge and experience grows, you’ll have the opportunity to work off-site on clients’ premises, setting up their accounting systems including entering customers and suppliers details, opening balances (vital for the start of each year), year-end returns and VAT returns.
STUDYING
1. You will be enrolled on to a training course with the Association of Accounting Technicians. This accountancy qualification normally takes around three years to complete, and at the end of the course you will be a qualified Accounting Technician.
2. The majority of our team then go onto a Level 7 qualification to become a fully qualified chartered accountant.
3. We provide generous study support including fully paid study leave as well as the course materials and exam entry fees.
4. You will need to study at home as well as completing coursework towards the qualification.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
1. You will need at least 5 GCSEs grade 4-9 with a 6 or above in English Language and Maths (or equivalent).
2. There’s no upper age limit: you must simply be over 16, not in full-time education and have lived in the UK or European Economic Area (EEA) for at least three years. We are unable to offer any type of sponsorship visa so you must be able to live and work in the UK.
3. As you will be working with a variety of clients you will need to be aware of their deadlines and make sure they are met. The work requires a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. You will need to be adaptable and flexible in your approach with the clients.
4. Previous experience of providing excellent customer service and the ability to demonstrate great communication skills is a definite plus.
