Job overview
We are seeking a medical engineer to join our team of highly skilled medical engineers within Walsall Manor Hospital. This is an exciting field which contributes to patient care, with excellent NHS terms and conditions.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will work with a broad range of medical electronic instrumentation to deliver a comprehensive medical device service program. This will include working to an established planned preventative maintenance programme for medical equipment.
He/she will possess the required skills and experience to cover the duties of other team members in their absence.
The post holder will be expected to work to high standards and to a high skill level, ensuring that equipment operates safely with a minimum downtime. It will be important to establish and maintain effective professional links with clinical users of the technical service.
The work will include duties on all Trust sites and other locations where the EBME Department has an agreed commitment to provide a service, including work under contract or service level agreement.
The clinically based technologist will provide the necessary support to medical and nursing staff where technology and complex techniques are being used.
The service will be provided over 5 out of 7 days with standard hours being 37.5 over 5 days. The post holder will be expected to demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to negotiate appropriate flexible working hours.
The post holder will be expected to be available for an on-call rota providing technical support for medical equipment at Walsall Manor Hospital.
He/she should have properly insured personal transport available. This will be a four-wheeled vehicle.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To be managerially and technically responsible to the EBME Section Head for all ongoing managerial, administrative and professional matters.
To be professionally accountable for matters that affects the calibration, servicing and maintenance of medical electronic equipment to the EBME Section Head.
To take responsibility for, prioritise and manage own workload in accordance with departmental procedures, policies objectives and shared priorities.
To carry out the range of duties associated with the other Band 6 positions.
When appropriate supervise junior staff apprentices and trainees, taking responsibility for their work.
To manage the condition and performance of equipment and other resources within the post holder’s areas of responsibility, escalating, where appropriate, issues to the Section Head or Head of EBME.
To participate in the full range of work undertaken by the EBME Team, including support on an agreed basis to all Trust areas, which may include Community and external contractual obligations, being responsible on a day-to-day basis for each aspect of the work to the EBME Section Head.
Responsible for performing the planned maintenance and non-routine repairs of a wide range of medical equipment used in direct patient treatment and monitoring.
Possess the skills and dexterity required to maintain and repair a range of highly complex and delicate equipment using precision tools and intricate test equipment to and exceeding the current medical equipment standards.
Exercise autonomous judgement in determining the cause and rectifying faults in medical devices with highly complex and inter-related systems (e.g. electronic, computer and mechanical systems).

Liaising with manufacturers to obtain information and reporting fault conditions.
To carry out procedures which will be complex and to share in the broad work of the EBME Team. This work will require constructive relationships with clinical users to be established and maintained, and a high degree of teamwork.
To achieve and maintain a level of expertise which, combined with substantial personal initiative, will enable procedures to be completed without supervision.
To carry out commissioning, repair and preventative maintenance of complex medical equipment for which the Department carries responsibility, and to ensure that the highest possible standards of safety and of technical work are achieved and maintained.
Remove, decommission, and arrange for the appropriate and safe disposal of all types of obsolete or irreparable medical equipment.
In association with the EBME Section Head, advise users on the need for replacement or renovation of equipment.
Liaise with manufacturers to obtain resources to provide the most cost-effective repair of equipment.
To participate in laid down work schedules and to assist in maintenance of records of equipment maintenance, repairs, hazards, etc. which may be relevant to the technical support service, including the implementation of new and revised protocols and standards, such as the Trust Medical Devices Policy, Managing Medical Devices, Clinical Governance, CQC, Standards for Better Health and other applicable standards and policies.
To ensure, in co-operation with the EBME Section Head that at all times as agreed a technologist is available to clinical users within an agreed maximum time, following an initial call.
To co-operate closely with all Medical Engineering staff with regard to electronic and mechanical aspects of safety, on-going maintenance and development of medical equipment.
To contribute towards the development of computer-based systems used within the EBME Department.
To conform to the systems, processes and procedures within the EBME Department, and assisting the department to achieve its target of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management.
Provide work based supervision, technical advice and training to new, less experienced or locum staff as well as supervising the work of external contractors or manufacturers agents while on Trust property, as necessary.
To contribute as required towards the training of other staff, and to co-operate with medical, nursing and other staff.
To be available for travel to other hospitals as required.
To demonstrate a flexible approach to the needs of the EBME Department.
To conform to safe working practices, and departmental policies and procedures.
To undertake any other duties which may be required by the Head of Clinical Engineering, Head of EBME or other Operational Managers, and which are appropriate to the post.

Qualifications
* Relevant degree or equivalent level of knowledge in electrical/electronic engineering, plus additional specialist knowledge and experience.
* Demonstrate on-going training (CPD) to ensure that relevant theoretical knowledge has been continually updated.

* The post holder should be able to • Use Microsoft applications to set up documents, spreadsheets and extract information. • Use fine tools for equipment adjustment.
* Familiarity with Infohealth f2 asset management.
