Location(s): Plympton
Walter C. Parson is a family business established in 1842 which has remained in the family for seven generations. We strive to deliver a first class service, one which would only be acceptable to a member of our own family. We have a vacancy for a Transport Manager to join our team based at our Plympton office.
We are seeking an exceptional candidate to manage our team of staff at Plympton, planning their work schedules to ensure that funerals take place efficiently and to the highest possible standard. The role also involves overseeing the maintenance and cleaning of our fleet of 40 vehicles, which are predominantly BMW, Ford and Volkswagen. We are proud to be the only funeral director in the UK with a BMW funeral fleet, which includes two 7 Series hearses and 11 long wheelbase 7 Series limousines.
You will need to have a good general understanding of cars and a knowledge of Plymouth and the surrounding area to allow you to accurately plan routes and timings for funerals. Funeral transport is planned using a bespoke software package, for which full training will be provided. Strong communication skills are essential to ensure collaboration between the transport, coffin workshop and embalming departments.
You will also occasionally be required to carry out duties associated with the role including driving and bearing on funerals, facilitating viewings with bereaved families, removal of the deceased from the place of death and coffin preparation.
Our ideal candidate will be organised, methodical, well presented, trustworthy, courteous and polite, pay close attention to detail and be able to deal with people with empathy whilst at the same time having a smile on your face. A full driving licence is also required.
Previous experience in the transport industry would be an advantage.
This role will be based at our Plympton branch, working full time between 8.30am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. In this role you will be required to take part in the Out of Hours Removal Rota to allow us to provide a 24-hour service. This involves being on call outside of office hours for 13 weeks during the year on a rota basis. As a result, you will benefit from 6 weeks’ annual holiday on a rota basis, as well as being paid for out of hours duties in addition to your salary.
There is scope for future progression, which would include the additional responsibility of having input into purchasing vehicles, garage equipment and products to a quality and price specification and management of the wider site at Plympton.
Completed application forms should be returned through this website by 4pm on Friday 7th February 2025, however applications will be reviewed as soon as we receive them.
