Job overview
Clinical Education Fellow - Martha's Rule - North Thames Paediatric Network and Children’s Acute Transport Service
**Please note this role will be based from an office either directly located with the Children's Acute Transport Service Team/Network team or PGME team. The role will be based around a five-day Mon-Fri onsite model for the start of the pilot with a possibility of some hybrid/home working only if workable within the pilot model (to be agreed and determined by the Network Martha’s Implementation Team). Candidates should expect to be able to work onsite up to five days a week. There will also be some ad hoc site visits required to hospital sites in the Network (travel expenses included where relevant) in order to provide an outreach visit service to support local teams. **
This is an exciting clinical fellow opportunity to develop skills within the Post Graduate Medical Education team at Great Ormond Street, as well as be part of a national pilot aimed at delivering improvements across a paediatric network footprint in North London and North Thames as part of ‘Martha’s Rule’.
Martha Mills died in 2021 after developing sepsis in hospital, where she had been admitted with a pancreatic injury after falling off her bike. Martha’s family’s concerns about her deteriorating condition were not responded to and in 2023 a coroner ruled that Martha would probably have survived had she been moved to intensive care earlier.
Main duties of the job
In response to this and other cases related to the management of deterioration, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care and NHS England committed to implement ‘Martha’s Rule’; to ensure the vitally important concerns of the patient and those who know the patient best are listened to and acted upon. The North Thames Paediatric Network together with the Children's Acute Transport Service (CATS) and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) are proud to have the opportunity to pilot a model that serves to ensure that all patients and their families have access to the same 24/7 rapid review from a critical care outreach team.
The Network’s proposed pilot plan is to rapidly develop and launch a true patient and family centred Martha’s Rule network level solution that compliments and enhances the local hospital escalation procedures.
The post is divided into two parts.
