Based in Liverpool with international travel as required
The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) is a world-leading institution dedicated to improving health through research, education, and capacity building in tropical medicine and global health. We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our internationally renowned Vector Biology Department, contributing to cutting-edge research on vector-borne diseases.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team applying a diverse array of ‘-omics’ technologies to understand the evolution of insecticide resistance and will help to develop genomic surveillance tools that facilitate evidence-based decision making in malaria control.
The programme is part of a collaboration with the Uganda Virus Research Institute, the Kenya Medical Research Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute. The position will be based at LSTM but with the expectation of travel to Uganda and Kenya for research and training.
Given the multidisciplinary nature of the project we welcome applications from candidates who hold a PhD in range of fields including Biology, Computer Science, Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Ecology or Genomics. Previous experience working with insect vectors is not essential and we would encourage all researchers interested in addressing fundamental evolutionary questions in an applied context to apply.
Key responsibilities include:
1. Apply evolutionary genetic approaches to the study of disease vectors
* Design and implement transcriptomic- and genomic-based studies to address fundamental evolutionary questions in Anopheles mosquitoes
1. Provide support and supervision to students and technical staff within the group
* Create training materials for, and provide training in, molecular and analytical techniques to others in the lab
* Assist in the design and supervision of PhD student projects
* Assist in training and mentoring staff that provide technical assistance to your project
* Support students and technicians working on similar topics, especially in the analysis of their data
* Generate ideas and data to support new project applications
2. Develop novel projects, and production and dissemination of research outputs
* Contribute to the writing of research grants/ fellowships in collaboration with PIs
* Contribute to peer-reviewed research publications and scientific reports for donors
* Disseminate findings through publications and conferences, as relevant to research
The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as an integral member of a multi-disciplinary, multi-national research team. You will also demonstrate:
* PhD in Biology, Computer Science, Epidemiology, Bioinformatics, Ecology or Genomics
* Significant experience in molecular biology and/or experience or knowledge of next generation sequencing technologies and/or experience of epidemiology, data management and bioinformatics
* Well-developed research skills with the ability to present research findings in oral or written format
* Evidence of preparing publications for specialist/ general science journals
* Familiarity with the general research themes of the host lab and the wider Department of Vector Biology
