I have been assigned by an NHS Trust in the UK to help them recruit a Consultant in Anaesthetics on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months.
The appointee will be joining an expanding, innovative and dynamic department of 85 Consultants, 40 Trainees and 20 Senior Clinical Fellows/Clinical Fellows, providing anaesthetic services in this thriving, modern teaching hospital. This trust's main theatre suite currently has 22 theatres. There are also 6 theatres in the Treatment Centre, 3 additional theatres for neurosurgery, 2 theatres in the Eye Unit, 2 obstetric theatres and 2 theatres in the Princess of Wales Day Surgery Unit. The Department of Anaesthesia provides comprehensive anaesthetic services to the following specialties: Accident Service/Orthopaedics/Major Trauma Centre, Breast Surgery, Community Dental Clinic, ECT, ENT, General Surgery, including upper Gastro-intestinal and Colorectal, Gynaecology and Gynaecological Oncology, Obstetrics, Ophthalmology, Radiotherapy/Oncology and more. Our client fulfils a number of important functions; its three main core activities are clinical care, research and teaching. It is the local hospital for people living in the area, providing emergency, surgical, medical and maternity care. Additionally, it is: a government-designed biomedical research centre and part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), one of six academic health science centres in the UK, a university teaching hospital with a worldwide reputation, a partner in the development of the Biomedical Campus, and a leading national centre for specialist treatment for rare or complex conditions such as organ transplantation, cancer, neurosciences and paediatrics.
The appointee will be asked to undertake various duties, including:
1. Provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to the trust with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
2. Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
3. Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in Consultant on-call rota where applicable.
4. Participating in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and in CPD along with other duties which will be discussed at a further date with the clinical lead.
