The perioperative Health Care Assistant is part of the multidisciplinary team supporting care to patients during the perioperative journey within the operating department. Support and supervision are provided by a Registered Professional.
The Perioperative Healthcare support worker (PHCSW) carries out a range of support tasks and duties to enable the team to provide an effective and efficient service within the acute hospital setting.
To Achieve This The PHCSW Will
* Competently perform the necessary aspects of patient care.
* Ensure effective delivery of clinical care is provided to patients and that an acceptable standard is maintained.
* Follow Trust policies and provide a safe and person-centred environment for the treatment of patients.
* Participate in personal and practice development activities to maintain standards of care.
* Maintain a sterile field and establish a safe surgical environment.
* Participate in the Five Steps for Safer Surgery including the WHO safe surgery checklist.
* Perform the role as the third competent Circulating Practitioner for a range of cases.
* Collect and prepare specimens and maintain accurate record keeping of the specimens.
* Assist with patient positioning and use of patient positioning equipment in the theatre.
* Assist with the safe transfer of patients from anaesthetic trolley to bed.
* Ensure the safe collection of the patient from the ward to theatre.
* Communicate/liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards of patient care.
* Demonstrate care and compassion to patients’ carers and relatives to help ensure high-quality person-centred patient care is always delivered.
* Provide support to the Registered Professional and where appropriate, other members of the clinical team as required.
* Co-operate and maintain good relationships with the team colleagues and staff in other disciplines that are attending theatres and delivering patient care.
