Applications are invited for the post of Bank Consultant Histopathologist/Cellular Pathologist. There are at present 5 Consultant Histopathologists, 2 speciality doctors and one retired consultant on the bank within the department based at North Tyneside General Hospital. The department has full UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation.
The histology workload amounts to approximately 25,000 requests per year and covers a broad range of medical and surgical specialties (excluding neuropathology and renal biopsies). A full range of special stains is available, and immunocytochemistry staining is fully automated with a wide range of antibodies available. There are approximately 2500 non-gynae cases received annually, comprising fine needle aspirates from most sites with the usual range of brushings and washings from the bronchus, FNA breast, thyroid, pleural, peritoneal washings, bile duct brushings and urine samples.
Main duties of the job
We cover a wide range of specimens including GI, Breast, Skin, Gynae along with diagnostic biopsies in urology, lung, bronchial. mTuitive is used for reporting cancerous breast cores, breast and colorectal cancer specimens, hysterectomies, bronchial biopsies. We report non-gynae cytology primarily fluids, FNA of various sites including EBUS.
The successful candidates will be encouraged to develop a special interest to complement the other members of the department and expected to undertake the full range of pathologist duties involved in the delivery of the histopathology/cytology provision.
In line with recent advances in the field of histopathology, the department has introduced Digital Pathology scanning 100% of histology cases and has an up to date recently launched LIMS (Clinisys WinPath Enterprise).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
* Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists or equivalent.
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain entry to UK CCT.
* Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practice) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
* If an applicant is UK trained, they must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
* If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
* Experience of Audit Management.
* Experience of teaching.
* Formal training in Clinical Supervision/train the trainers.
* Experience of coronial post mortem work and willingness to participate in an autopsy rota.
