Job Summary
The opportunity has arisen for a well-motivated and enthusiastic Haematology/Transfusion Biomedical Scientist, Band 5 or 6 dependent on experience, to join the Laboratory Medicine team at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust. Role is a full time (37.5hrs / week) position. As a Band 6 Biomedical Scientist, you will already have an IBMS Specialist Diploma in Haematology with hospital Transfusion practice. As a Band 5, you will benefit from automatic progression to Band 6 once you have completed the Specialist Portfolio.
Main duties of the job
The laboratory is an IBMS registered training laboratory with a strong training ethos. In your role you will undertake day to day analysis and validation of results, together with the monitoring of quality indicators. You will participate in out of hours shifts once trained and competent in the relevant areas. Good communication skills, teamwork, and an aptitude for problem solving are essential, as is a flexible attitude to work and willingness to adapt to changes in working practice. The Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratory is well equipped and benefits from Beckman Coulter DXH900/SMS for Haematology, Bio-Rad IH500 for Blood Transfusion and Stago Star-Max for Coagulation.

Qualifications
Essential
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent
* State Registration as Biomedical Scientist with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
* Post-graduate, post-registration training in a specialist area, leading to a completed specialist portfolio (or working towards)
Desirable
* Willing to pursue further qualifications.
Knowledge
Essential
* Understands theoretical and practical laboratory procedures within the department.
* Ability to work within all areas of the department.
* Understands quality control / quality assurance procedures.
* Evidence of continuing professional development to demonstrate specialist knowledge.
Experience
Essential
* At least two years' experience as an HCPC registered biomedical scientist.
* Detailed working knowledge of laboratory information and management computer system.
* Problem solving.
* Working knowledge of standard IT packages.
Desirable
* Exhibit competency to work alone during a shift.
Skills
Essential
* Possess highly developed technical skills and be adept at all laboratory procedures.
* Ability to operate / troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment and interpret results.
* Competent at training other staff.
* Ability to organise own workload and that of subordinate staff.
