BEAR Scotland inspect, manage and maintain over 2500km of Scotland’s truck road network including 1500 trunk road structures in the North West of Scotland for our client, Transport Scotland. We work in some of the most scenic but challenging parts of the country on a variety of structures including bridges, culverts, retaining walls, gantries and masts.
An opportunity has arisen within BEAR Scotland’s North West Bridges Team for a Bridge Engineer to work in our Perth office. The role would involve working within a diverse team on the investigation, design, procurement and construction of various bridge maintenance schemes.
Candidates should have experience of civil engineering design and as well as a knowledge of health and safety, environmental and commercial aspects of schemes. Candidates should be professionally qualified or working towards professional qualification.
We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are interested in progressing their careers by helping manage the delivery of a diverse programme of work. The successful candidates will have good team working and communication skills, be flexible and hold a valid driving licence.
Applications will also be considered from Graduates or Senior Engineers who would be given an appropriate role.
Job Purpose:
1. The Bridge Engineer will assist in the investigation, design, planning, procurement and construction management of bridge maintenance works on the network. The postholder will work with internal and sub-contractors’ resources.
Responsibilities and Activities include (but are not restricted to):
2. Detailed design of bridge maintenance schemes
3. Compliance with technical standards.
4. Preparation of Departures from Standard when applicable.
5. Preparation of reports, investigations, feasibility studies and assessments.
6. Work as part of a team within NW Bridges and with other BEAR departments.
7. Produce tender documents, preconstruction information and construction packages.
8. Work with commercial specialists to complete tender evaluations and assist with contract award.
9. Procure, supervise and measure maintenance works.
10. Work with Environmental specialists to ensure adequate environmental screening is undertaken and appropriate mitigation measures are implemented prior to work commencing.
11. Follow Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures that form part of the company’s Integrated management systems.
12. Assist in the team’s compliance with the CDM Regulations and ensure that robust risk assessments are carried out before works, operations or inspections take place.
13. Use the clients’ structures management systems and geographical inventory system to keep structure data and as built records up to date.
14. Prepare cost estimates and monitor the internal financial performance of individual schemes.
15. Assist Graduate Engineers and Technicians within the team.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
16. Educated to degree level in Civil or Structural Engineering
17. Experience in civil engineering design
18. Professional qualification and membership of an appropriate professional body or a clear path to membership.
19. A full approved UK driving licence.
20. Clear communicator.
