Job Purpose
To deliver an efficient and effective equine surgery referral service by providing expertise and clinical activity in Glasgow Equine Hospital. To enhance and develop the delivery of clinical teaching to undergraduates, interns and residents. To undertake clinical research/scholarship, thereby contributing to the School objectives relative to national and international excellence in clinical service, clinical research/scholarship and teaching. If appropriate, the individual will develop a referral service in equine dentistry/head and neck surgery.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical:
1. To provide a high-quality surgical service to external referring practices, which will maintain and build a clinical referral workload necessary to support teaching and research/scholarship activities. If appropriate, the individual will develop a referral service in equine dentistry/head and neck surgery.
2. To develop novel approaches and techniques to aid diagnosis and treatment and exploit the opportunities to enhance the income generation capability of the service.
3. To participate in the out-of-hours surgical referral service, ensuring adequate cover is available for the provision of direct supervision, advice and expertise when required.
4. To provide scholarship and mentorship to staff associated with the equine surgery service and assist with the planning, organisation and delivery of training requirements of the clinical scholars by supervision of clinical duties and research projects, with a view to their successful completion of appropriate Board examinations.
5. To become involved with practical/professional and/or clinical practice bodies related to the service area at national and international level as appropriate.
6. To ensure compliance with the continuing professional development requirements of the appropriate speciality and the RCVS.
7. To participate in promotional activities and events relating to the equine surgery service of Glasgow Equine Hospital & Practice.
8. To contribute to the ongoing development of the academic discipline of the Division, by developing links with colleagues in external bodies as appropriate so that the highest professional standards are maintained.
Teaching:
1. To contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities and the Clinical Scholar didactic programme within veterinary medicine in accordance with established programme.
2. To deliver a range of assessment activities (using a variety of methods and techniques) and engage fully in the examination process and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
3. To support the development of, and encourage the development of, creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, in accordance with the University’s Quality Enhancement Strategy, so that the educational opportunities available to students are maintained or improved.
Clinical Research/Scholarship:
1. To conduct clinical research and/or educational scholarship of an external reputation and maintain a consistent output of publications in high quality refereed journals and/or textbooks.
2. To collaborate in appropriate clinical research/scholarship projects through a portfolio of individual/joint research projects, to secure the funding required to underpin the long-term growth of the activity and to present findings at national and international meetings to ensure a high profile for the School, as well as the University of Glasgow.
3. To attend and actively contribute/participate in national/international events/major clinical seminars/conferences within service area.
Administration:
1. To contribute to the administrative work of the Hospital/Division as assigned by the Head of Division/Hospital Director.
2. To contribute to performance and development review processes as appropriate in accordance with University Strategy.
3. To contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, Inspiring People Changing The World.
For appointment at Grade 9 the post holder would be expected to demonstrate leadership as evidenced in:
1. Undertaking and developing clinical services.
2. Participating in national/international, high quality clinical research/scholarships and research-led education.
3. Contributing to academic development in the School through: clinical scholarship, training and teaching, and contributing at national level through external association.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
1. A1 Veterinary degree (or equivalent, registerable with RCVS).
2. A2 Postgraduate clinical qualification in equine surgery (European, American or Australasian, DipECVS, DipACVS, RCVS diploma, FANZCVS).
Desirable:
1. B1 Masters, PhD (or other evidence of research training).
2. B2 Postgraduate clinical qualification in Equine Dentistry (DipEVDC).
3. B3 Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy/ Postgraduate qualification in teaching practice.
Skills
Essential:
1. C1 Expertise across the field, corresponding to training and qualifications, and ability to provide expert advice to clinicians, external veterinary surgeons, research bodies and organisations.
2. C2 A high standard of communication skills, both oral and written.
3. C3 Self-motivation; ability to plan for contingencies and think strategically.
4. C4 Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
5. C5 Ability to accept collegiate responsibilities and act accordingly.
6. C6 High level presentation skills.
7. C7 Understanding and experience of databases and other IT applications/packages.
For appointment at Grade 9:
1. C8 Proven leadership and motivational ability in teaching and the ability to actively lead clinical teams as appropriate.
Experience
Essential:
1. E1 Experience in equine referral surgery, dealing with primary and secondary referrals.
2. E2 Teaching experience relevant to the HE sector.
For appointment at Grade 9:
1. E3 An extensive experience, with an established reputation as an advanced clinician in an equine surgery speciality, and a major contributor to the treatment and management of diseases in this field.
2. E4 An established reputation in clinical research and/or scholarship and a major contributor in the equine surgical disciplines.
3. E5 Successful supervision/career development of post-graduate students studying for clinical diplomas.
4. E6 Record of award of competitive grant funding for clinical or basic research.
Desirable:
1. F1 Extensive experience in equine dentistry, head and neck surgery.
2. F2 An established reputation as an advanced clinician in an equine surgery speciality and major contributor to the treatment and management of diseases in this field.
3. F3 An established reputation in clinical research and publications, and a major contributor in equine surgical disciplines.
4. F4 Successful supervision/career development of post-graduate students studying for clinical diplomas.
5. F5 Record of award of competitive grant funding for clinical research.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 8/9, £49,559 - £57,422/£59,139 - £66,537 per annum plus (if applicable) an out-of-hours supplement £2,000/£4,000 per annum and if required to attend on site for an emergency call out, you will be paid £150 per hour up to a maximum of 4 hours per case. In addition a clinical supplement will be paid (if applicable) adjusted relative to time spent on clinics.
This post is full time and open ended.
