Xtrac is the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of specialist transmissions.
Our customers include the top motorsports racing series including Formula One, Le Mans, IndyCar and NASCAR and we also supply transmissions for the most exclusive high-performance cars in the world.
We are at the forefront of a once-in-a-generation opportunity as the automotive industry transitions from internal combustion to electric and hybrid and our experienced and dedicated teams are using the latest cutting-edge technology to achieve this transition.
About the Role
Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to work within a world leading organisation? We’re looking for a Hardware in the Loop (HiL) Engineer to join us as we continue to grow and deliver high profile projects to both our motorsport and high-performance automotive customers.
As a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Engineer, you will be at the forefront of testing and validating the performance, reliability, and safety of Xtrac’s cutting-edge transmission systems. Your work will involve designing and developing HIL systems to simulate complex real-world scenarios, ensuring the seamless integration of transmission systems into high-performance vehicles.
This is a highly collaborative role, requiring close interaction with simulation, software, controls, and systems engineering teams to support the development of groundbreaking technology in the motorsport and high-performance automotive industries.
About your Day
System Design & Development
* Lead the design, setup, and maintenance of HIL testing systems, ensuring compatibility with Xtrac’s advanced transmission and vehicle systems.
* Integrating real-time simulation models of vehicle dynamics, powertrains, and transmissions using industry-standard HIL platforms (e.g., dSPACE, NI, or similar).
* Customize hardware and software configurations to support specific test cases, leveraging tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
Testing & Validation
* Develop and execute test plans to validate software, control systems, and hardware components against functional, performance, and safety requirements.
* Perform fault injection testing and validate fail-safe functionalities to ensure robustness and reliability under various operating conditions.
* Automate repetitive test cases to improve efficiency and consistency, using industry standard tools.
* Analyse test results to identify and troubleshoot system issues, supporting root cause analysis and resolution.
* Provide actionable recommendations for design or software enhancements, working closely with cross-functional teams to implement improvements.
* Stay up-to-date with emerging trends in HIL testing methodologies, tools, and best practices, proactively driving innovation within the team.
* Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to define testing requirements, ensuring alignment with project goals.
* Communicate findings effectively through detailed technical reports and presentations to stakeholders.
About You
Required Skills & Experience:
* A degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
* Proven hands-on experience in the development and use of HIL testing systems, ideally within the automotive or motorsport industries.
* Proficiency in HIL platforms such as dSPACE, Speedgoat or National Instruments (NI), with hands-on experience in tools like ControlDesk, VeriStand, LabVIEW, or similar.
* Solid knowledge of automotive communication protocols (e.g., CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and tools such as CANalyzer, CANape, or Vector tools.
* Demonstrated ability to analyse and interpret complex data to identify system performance issues.
* Strong programming skills in Python, C, or similar for scripting and test automation.
* Good understanding of transmission systems, drivetrain components, and vehicle dynamics. Understanding real-time modeling and simulation using MATLAB/Simulink or comparable tools.
* Experience working in motorsport or high-performance automotive environments.
* Familiarity with hybrid or electric vehicle systems, including power electronics and battery management systems.
* Understanding of safety-critical systems and ISO 26262 compliance.
* Knowledge of data acquisition systems and hardware interfaces.
Personal Attributes:
* Excellent problem-solving skills with a structured and methodical approach to troubleshooting.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
* A proactive attitude towards continuous improvement and innovation.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
