As a SCHPN school nurse you will require excellent communication skills and a broad knowledge of working in the community with children and their wider family.

The School Nursing team deliver a service that is commissioned by Coventry City Council and provided by South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, which is ranked in the top 5 in the staff survey and rated outstanding by CQC.
Main duties of the job
The school nurse will be the named nurse for a number of schools and GP practices within a geographical area and will prioritise, organise and delegate work within the team to ensure effective delivery of service and best use of resource.
The school nurse will lead the team in the delivery of public health programmes and ensure the delivery of the Health Questionnaires to improve outcomes for children, young people and families. You will also have additional special responsibility for a designated area as required by the service e.g. young carers etc.
The school nurse will ensure children, young people, families and school communities know the role and function of the school nursing service and how to access the service.
Job responsibilities
1. Oversee the delivery of The Health Questionnaires: parents, Year 6 and Year 9.
2. Respond to Health Questionnaire alerts within timescales; make professional judgement to assign/delegate care to skill mix team. Ensuring you evaluate care provided by receiving feedback from the team on the outcomes of interventions.
3. Offer brief intervention to ensure timely response to identified need, and discharge appropriately.
4. Have an understanding of the health needs of the local geographical area by means of using profiling tools/accessing local data information from reliable sources, e.g. chimat, public health observatory to inform work undertaken and future practice development.
5. To develop networks with Education, Social Care and other statutory and voluntary agencies, to work collaboratively in achieving National and local priorities e.g. Acting Early initiative.
6. Lead at least 3 health public health initiatives a year which are consistent with nation/local messages, e.g. sexual health, risk taking behaviour or emotional needs.
7. Actively contribute to appropriate planning and management meetings within the school environment to ensure the health care of children is being adequately addressed.
8. Working in conjunction with Health Visitor colleagues support to transition into Primary School of those children with identified needs.
9. Identify and support children, young people and families in need of universal plus services through the Common Assessment Framework process. This includes taking the role of Lead Professional where required and appropriate.
10. Work with parents, carers, specialist health professionals and others to develop and review in-school care plans for pupils with complex health needs and long term conditions annually or sooner if required.
11. Act on/document if required, intelligence or surveillance received from other sources, e.g. A&E forms, domestic abuse referrals, priority families, excluded children.
12. Have knowledge and understanding of Solihull Safeguarding Children Board policies and procedures. This includes initiating referrals to Childrens services when a child or young person is at risk. Providing written reports, chronologies as required attending initial case conferences taking part in risk assessment discussions and agreeing a plan for the child. Being part of review conferences and core groups where health needs are identified and planned work with the child or family is required.
13. Promote the school health service positively to other agencies and professionals.
14. Deliver work that is both researched and evidence based, follow and adhere to the standards and guidelines set for School Nursing to ensure a consistent approach is followed.
15. Submit accurate and timely activity and outcome data to ensure that key performance indicator targets set by the Trust/and or the local authority are reached.
16. Support children, young people and families during transition into school, and from primary to secondary and secondary to further education/ work.
17. Follow and adhere to the standards and guidelines set for School Nursing to ensure a consistent approach is followed.
18. Promote the uptake of the childhood immunisation programme when opportunities arise with contacts with children, young people and families.
19. Ensure that confidentiality is upheld at all times, as per trust guidelines.
20. Attend the Trust statutory and mandatory training programme specific to the role ensuring that training completed follows the essential skills policy including regular appraisal.
21. Participate in/access group or team clinical supervision.
22. Participate in and contribute to team/locality meetings to keep up to date with trust information.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse - Specialist Community Public Health Nurse degree -School Nursing
* Leadership Course or experience of leading teams.
* Mentoring & Assessing e.g. 998, CPD 308, C&G 730
Experience
* Must be able to demonstrate the ability to lead, deliver and evaluate preventative services for the school-age population and their families.
* Must have experience of leading a skill mix team
* Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of key performance indicators and how they influence service delivery
Skills
* Must be able to demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with children young people, families and other professionals
* Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the need for confidentiality in all aspects of the work of the department.
* Must be experienced and confident in safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults.
* Must be able to support other team members to develop and apply their knowledge and skills.
* Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the public health role in school nursing
* Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of further reading
* Must possess IT skills e.g. able to use Microsoft office/word
Personal Qualities
* Must be an excellent communicator and able to support the team through change understand
Other
* Must have a full driving licence, and access to a vehicle to undertake the community role
* Must be willing to undertake a Disclosure & Barring Service check.
* Must be legally entitled to work in this country
* Must be prepared to work between 8am - 6pm and weekend if required
