Treasurer & Secretary required to join our Board of Trustees. Both will play a vital role in ensuring the health and sustainability of the charity which is focused on preventing and relieving poverty in the local area.
Who we are
New Beginnings Reading is a homeless charity based in Reading, UK. Our aims are the prevention and relief of poverty and financial hardship of persons in Reading and the Greater Berkshire area who are in need due to social or economic reasons, regardless of their religion or belief. This includes (but is not limited to) providing clothing, food, essential items, sign-posting to other support services and assistance with independent living.
The Role
You will work closely with the Chair and other trustees to ensure that our resources and associated impact are managed effectively and responsibly.
Treasurer – Key Responsibilities:
1. Oversee the financial affairs of the charity, ensuring compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
2. Prepare and present regular financial reports to the Board of Trustees.
3. Develop and implement financial policies and procedures.
4. Monitor income and expenditure, ensuring that the charity operates within its budget.
5. Manage the charity’s bank accounts and investments.
6. Advise the Board of Trustees on financial matters.
Secretary – Key Responsibilities:
1. Organise and minute Board of Trustees meetings.
2. Maintain accurate records of the charity’s activities and decisions.
3. Ensure compliance with the charity’s governing document and all relevant legislation.
4. Manage the charity’s correspondence and communications.
5. Support the Chair and other trustees in their roles.
Treasurer – Essential Skills and Experience:
1. Proven experience in a financial management role.
2. Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices.
3. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
4. Ability to communicate financial information clearly and concisely.
5. Commitment to the values and mission of New Beginnings Reading.
Secretary – Essential Skills and Experience:
1. Excellent organisational and administrative skills.
2. Strong minute-taking and record-keeping abilities.
3. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
4. Good attention to detail and accuracy.
5. Commitment to the values and mission of New Beginnings Reading.
Desirable Skills and Experience:
1. Experience working in the charity sector.
2. Knowledge of charity finance regulations.
3. IT literacy.
4. (Treasurer) Qualification in accounting or finance (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
Time Commitment:
The Board of Trustees meets approximately every six weeks, with additional meetings as required. The Treasurer will also need to dedicate time to reviewing financial reports and attending to other financial matters.
