The successful applicant will be expected to build an elective practice in spines and will also have an interest in Trauma Surgery, as they would be expected to be a part of the general orthopaedic on-call Trauma rota across both sites.

Main duties of the job
As a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics (Spine Interest), you will play a key role in delivering expert spinal orthopaedic care, contributing to trauma services, and supporting education and research initiatives.
The successful candidate will join the established spinal team at STSFT, which currently comprises of 4 full-time consultants, 2 specialist physiotherapists, and 3 specialist nurse practitioners.
You will have an interest in the generality of spinal orthopaedics, as it is expected that this likely to make up all of the elective practice. Development of a relevant special interest within spinal orthopaedics would be encouraged.
Your main responsibilities will include:
* Clinical Care: Providing expert management of spinal orthopaedic conditions, participating in the general trauma rota, and supporting the development of spinal services within the Trust.
* Surgical Excellence: Performing elective spinal procedures and contributing to complex trauma cases, including spinal and pelvic fractures.
* Teaching & Research: Engaging in undergraduate and postgraduate education, mentoring junior doctors, and participating in research initiatives within the Trust.
* Leadership & Service Development: Contributing to clinical governance, quality improvement, and the strategic development of orthopaedic services.
* Collaborative Working: Engaging with a multi-disciplinary team of consultants, physiotherapists, and orthopaedic practitioners to provide the highest standard of patient care.

This advert is for a Consultant appointment on a permanent basis.
The post holder will join the existing team of 27 Trauma and Orthopaedic Consultants. Overall responsibilities include assisting the department in coordinating and delivering the strategic and operational aspects of Trauma and Orthopaedic services to the surrounding population.
The post holder is expected to possess FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of taking up the post. Fellowship training covering spinal orthopaedics is essential and additional training in the management of general trauma would be desirable.
The post holder is expected to attend the bi-monthly Directorate meetings and take part in monthly Audit and Clinical Governance meetings and related activities. The post-holder will undergo annual appraisal and 5 yearly revalidation in line with GMC requirements. The post holder will also be expected to develop the service in keeping with national guidance and local needs.
The appointee will be expected to undergo continuing medical education in accordance with the guidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and the post-holder will be entitled and encouraged to take regulatory study leave.
The T&O Department regularly receives medical students from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland plus occasionally from elsewhere and the post-holder will be expected to assist with their teaching.
The final Job Plan will be agreed in discussion between the successful candidate and the Clinical Director and will be subject to Annual Review.
Person Specification
Management and Administrative Experience
* Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues.
* Evidence of organisational, management, and time management skills.
* Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals.
* Management course and/or certificate.
Experience
* Have undertaken and completed a recognised fellowship in the sub-specialist interests.
* Be in a position to undertake treatment of conditions of all complexities for elective and trauma conditions.
Personal Attributes

Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
* Primary medical qualification.
* Full GMC registration.
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC [there is flexibility with the 6-month period with Executive Medical Director approval].
* Candidates are expected to be holders of the FRCS (Orth).
* Completion of Fellowship in Trauma.
* Have been involved in academic research as part of their training and have both presented and published peer-reviewed articles.
* Up-to-date ATLS certificate, preferably with instructor status.
Teaching and Education
* Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
* Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
* Ability to teach clinical/technical/practical skills.
* Qualification in medical education.
Audit and Research
* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice.
* Involvement in quality improvement measures.
* Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit/audit in specialty area.
* Experience of clinical research.
* Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals.
