The Project:
Dewey Group are pleased to be working closely with a reputable piling contractor to recruit for a permanent Senior Estimator position in their new offices located in the West Midlands. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Estimator to join a well-established company and be involved in high-profile piling projects. You will play a key role in the estimating process and be a point of contact for clients, contributing to the successful delivery of various large-scale projects.
Job Description:
As a Senior Estimator, you will report directly to the Associate Director of Design & Estimating. You will take on a lead role in managing the estimating process, providing accurate price estimates for a variety of piling schemes. Your primary responsibilities will include overseeing the preparation of tender submissions, engaging with clients to understand their needs, and guiding junior estimators within the team. This is a client-focused role, requiring excellent communication and organizational skills to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the estimating process for piling projects, from interpreting client drawings and specifications to providing accurate pricing for materials, labour, and equipment.
* Interpret Ground Investigation Reports to identify potential risks and propose effective installation methods.
* Work closely with the Contracts Team to conduct site inspections, assess site conditions, and identify any risks or challenges that may affect the tender process.
* Oversee the preparation and submission of tenders, ensuring all documentation is accurate, compliant with company policies, and meets client specifications.
* Engage with clients to fully understand their requirements and provide tailored solutions that align with their objectives.
* Provide leadership and mentorship to junior estimators, guiding them in the estimation process and helping to develop their skills.
* Ensure all estimating activities are aligned with the company’s Sales and Commercial Strategy.
* Maintain detailed records of client communication and project progress through the company’s CRM system.
* Identify risks and opportunities within the tender process and work with the Commercial and Contracts Teams to manage these aspects.
* Regularly review contract conditions and liaise with the Commercial Team to ensure that the company’s interests are well-represented in contract negotiations.
Mandatory Estimating Skills:
* Strong experience interpreting specifications, engineering plans, and Ground Investigation Reports.
* In-depth knowledge of piling installation methods, including sheet steel, king post, driven, or bored piles.
* Proven experience leading the preparation of complex tender submissions.
* High proficiency in Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and experience with CAD software for the tendering process.
* Strong numerical and data analysis skills.
* Ability to identify and manage risks within the tender process.
* Full driving license, as occasional site visits and client meetings are required.
Additional Skills and Qualities:
* Significant experience in the piling sector is highly desirable.
* Excellent leadership and mentoring skills.
* Strong project management capabilities, including familiarity with MS Project.
* Strong communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to build long-term client relationships.
* Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
* A proactive, client-focused approach with a flexible work ethic and strong problem-solving abilities.
Qualifications and Experience:
* BSc/MSc in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
* A minimum of 5 years’ experience in an estimating role, ideally within the piling or civil engineering sector.
