Main duties of the job
Provide evidence-based assessment, treatment and advice to patients with varying neurological conditions such as Traumatic Brain Injury, Parkinson's Disease, and Multiple Sclerosis.
Manage and prioritise a complex caseload of patients using specialist knowledge, clinical reasoning skills and collaboration with the MDT to provide a creative, patient centred, goal-orientated rehabilitation programme.
Continuously grow and enhance clinical skills by participating in continuous professional development, clinical supervision, education and training, audit and research projects
Mentor and support junior staff and undergraduate Occupational Therapy students through supervision, training and annual appraisal.
Contribute to the evaluation and improvement of the neuro rehab service and Occupational Therapy practice within Bromley Healthcare

Job responsibilities
Clinical
* Comprehensive and Specialised Assessments and Intervention: Independently perform detailed standardized and non-standardized assessments, covering physical, cognitive, mental, social, and environmental functioning including assessment for orthotics and wheelchairs. Evaluate manual handling, prescribe specialist equipment, and apply therapeutic handling, gait rehabilitation, and cognitive retraining, among other techniques, considering efficient use of resources.
* Capacity and Consent: Assess patient capacity and obtain informed consent, adhering to legal frameworks for those lacking capacity.
* Interdisciplinary Coordination: Develop collaborative, client-centered, goal-orientated treatment plans, liaising with patients, carers, and other professionals. Attend and/or lead multi-professional meetings.
* Caseload Management: Independently manage a complex caseload, seeking advice as required. Design holistic, client-specific programs using advanced clinical reasoning, evidence-based practices, and diverse treatment modalities, using outcome measures to evaluate therapy efficacy.
* Triage and Referral: Screen referrals to determine suitability for services or redirect to appropriate resources.
* Education and Empowerment: Provide training and advice to patients and carers on rehabilitation strategies and coping mechanisms.
* Risk Management: Proactively identify and mitigate risks in clinical practice, including patient handling and equipment use. Perform and guide others in conducting routine and complex risk assessments, with a focus on moving and handling. Adhere to Health & Safety regulations, report hazards or incidents, and maintain safe working practices. Manage identified risks in collaboration with the Line Manager.
* Discharge Planning: Ensure safe discharge through collaboration with service providers, assessing home environments, and facilitating transitions.
* Documentation: Maintain high-quality accurate records in a timely manner. Prepare written reports to inform health and social care providers of client need, for example rehabilitation potential or recommendations for future care needs.
Professional
Adhere to RCOT and HCPC professional standards, uphold BHC values, and follow relevant legislation, policies, pathways, and procedures. Ensure practice aligns with local and national health and social care guidelines and legislation.
Establish and maintain effective communication networks with patients, carers, MDT, other workers and agencies across health, social care and the voluntary sector locally and regionally.
Promote awareness of the role of Occupational Therapists.
Network nationally across other Occupational Therapy and rehab providers and educators for the development of best practice & improve service delivery for patients.
Be responsible for own personal development in order to establish and maintain competence as a Specialist Neuro Occupational Therapist. Maintain a professional evidence-based portfolio, meeting the requirements of the HCPC.
Be responsible for the supervision and written assessment of Occupational Therapist students on practice placement within the Trust. To support with supervision and support of any AHP student.
Be responsible for the supervision and training of Occupational Therapists, Rehab assistants and other AHPs within Bromley Healthcare.
To deliver teaching sessions to staff within Bromley Healthcare and other forums as required and use appropriate mechanisms to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of the education and training provided.
Be involved / assist in the recruitment and selection of junior staff.
Uphold patient confidentiality, particularly regarding electronic data, as per the Data Protection Act.
Organisational
Collate, interpret and analyse activity data and report on findings for service development & provide specialist reports on patient & service related issues as required.
Initiate the planning, evaluation and audit of practice, clinical pathways and protocols using where appropriate national guidelines / legislation within area of speciality disseminating findings at local / national level.
Contribute to Bromley Healthcares clinical governance processes and quality improvement initiatives, including the setting and monitoring of practice standards, clinical risks, clinical audit and evaluation and, health & safety.
To participate in the operational planning and implementation of policy and service development initiatives in line with Bromley Healthcare strategic objectives, leading on delegated projects.
Be aware of and assist with managing resources and equipment necessary to meet service needs in clinical area, reporting any faults.
Other Duties
You may be asked to work at weekend and out of hours as appropriate and necessary in unfamiliar areas with complex cases requiring rapid assessment caseload and prioritisation skills.
You may be required to provide support or cover for other services within the organization, as appropriate to your skills and experience, to meet service needs.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Recognised occupational therapy degree qualification or equivalent
* Registered with the Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC )
* Member of RCOT
* Documented evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Completion of relevant postgraduate neuro training such as cognitive rehab
* Evidence of post graduate training/experience in clinical setting
* Member of relevant special interest groups or clinical excellence network
* Practice Educator training
* Evidence of leadership training
Experience
* Experience of working in a neuro rehab setting
* Experience of working with individuals with long term health conditions
* Experience in multidisciplinary and multiagency working
* Experience of carrying out or supporting service improvement projects and/or clinical audits
* Experience of supervising students and/or junior colleagues
* Experience of teaching and supporting students and rehab assistants
* Experience of coping appropriately with distressing situations such as dealing with terminally ill patients and their families
Skills
* Specialist knowledge of OT assessment, treatment and evaluation and how to apply this effectively within neuro rehabilitation
* Specialist clinical reasoning skills
* Detailed knowledge of relevant legislation and current best practice in OT
* Ability to work autonomously and independently manage own time to set own priorities and manage workload effectively
* Understanding of all areas of clinical governance including clinical audit
* Current UK drivers license/ Car driver with use of own car for work
* Specialist knowledge of OT role within a community setting
* Group facilitation and presentation skills, both written and oral.
* Developed negotiation, persuasion, motivation and counselling skills
