TSL is developing a novel pyrolysis-to- jet (PTJ) pathway to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and high-value chemicals from diverse biomass feedstocks.
Role Overview
We are seeking an innovative and detail-oriented Junior or Senior Research & Development Scientist to join our team in developing cutting-edge pyrolysis-to-jet fuel/SAF technologies. This role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to next-generation renewable fuels and play a critical role in sustainable aviation.
The position is open to candidates with diverse experience levels, from recent bachelor, Master, and PhD graduates to experienced industry professionals looking to advance their careers in SAF production and biomass conversion technologies.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory and Pilot Operations:
* Set up and maintain a state-of-the-art laboratory for biomass pyrolysis and fuel conversion research.
* Conduct and Analyse experiments using advanced analytical equipment (e.g, FTIR, KF, TAN, GC-MS, HPLC, NMR).
* Lead pilot reactor setup, operation, and optimisation for scale-up.
Process Development and Optimization:
* Develop and optimise processes for biomass conversion, focusing on jet fuel and SAF production .
* Perform process simulations, scale-up studies, and experimental design.
* Utilise design of experiments (DOE) and process engineering methodologies.
Data Analysis and Computational Modelling:
* Analyse complex datasets using statistical methods and machine learning algorithms .
* Interpret and present findings in technical reports, publications, and conferences.
Collaboration and Technical Leadership:
* Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and industry partners.
* Mentor junior researchers and technicians .
* Coordinate with vendors, EPC contractors, and external consultants.
Compliance and Safety:
* Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and industry regulations. o Lead HAZOPs and risk mitigation activities .
Qualifications and Skills Essential Qualifications:
* PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (or MSc with substantial industry experience).
* 2+ years of postdoctoral or industrial R&D experience (for the senior position; recent PhD graduates considered for the junior position).
* Extensive wet chemistry and laboratory experience .
* Expertise in biomass pyrolysis, fuel chemistry, and sustainable processes .
* Proficiency with analytical instruments (GC-MS, HPLC, NMR) and data analysis tools .
* Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently.
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills .
* Proven track record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
* Experience in grant writing and securing research funding .
* Proficiency in design of experiments (DOE) and process design.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with emerging technologies, such as co-pyrolysis of biomass, Hydrotreating, and pyrolysis oil fractionation technologies
* Proficiency in the Design of Experiments, Process Flow modelling, and optimisation .
* Knowledge of life cycle assessment (LCA) and carbon accounting methods for evaluating SAF production.
* Familiarity with aviation fuel standards and emerging SAF mandates .
* Experience scaling up processes from lab to pilot scale .
* Experience collaborating with aviation industry partners or presenting at industry
conferences .
