Job overview
The Perinatal Mental Health Service is a growing specialist service for women and their families in Sheffield. We are excited to have received investment to expand the service, and are now recruiting more staff to come and join our team.
You will need to be an experienced Mental Health Practitioner (we are inviting applications from a range of professional backgrounds) with a real passion for perinatal mental health. Experience in this field is not essential and full induction is offered, but you will be keen to develop a career in this area. You should have attained a level of experience proportionate to the competencies detailed in the job description, possess the skills as detailed in the person specification and be able to work autonomously and with partner agencies. We are a trauma informed service that seeks to understand presenting difficulties in the context of people’s whole lives and work with that to promote understanding. You will be a compassionate practitioner who wants to make a difference to families.
We are recruiting to permanent hours and a fixed term position to cover maternity, and are inviting applications for both of these positions to apply.
Main duties of the job
* To work as a Practitioner in the Perinatal Mental Health Service in Sheffield.
* To triage referrals into the service and work into a duty rota.
* To undertake the assessment and co-ordinate the treatment plans of clients with, or at high risk of, childbirth related serious and complex mental illness.
* To provide specialist advice about evidence based treatments for perinatal mental health disorders, both to other professionals and to service users and their families.
* Joint working with other services and organisations is an essential part of the role, especially with clients with severe and enduring mental health problems, who may need the additional skills of this specialised service during pregnancy and the postnatal period.
* To support clients with their recovery from or adaptation to their mental health difficulties and ensure timely and safe discharge from the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
* To work with the other staff in the service to triage, assess and care plan for women presenting with perinatal mental health problems
* To include women, their families and carers in decision making and care planning
* To signpost or refer patients to appropriate statutory and non-statutory services
* To work closely with the external stakeholders to promote a good care experience for perinatal women
* To conduct routine and emergency biopsychosocial, risk and mental health assessments in accordance with service policy
* To safely discharge patients from the perinatal mental health service in collaboration with other perinatal mental health service staff
* To negotiate clinical input from other disciplines from within and external to the perinatal mental health service to ensure the provision of a clinically appropriate and multidisciplinary approach
* To develop close working links with other mental health teams and agencies to enable swift and appropriate transfer between services
* To contribute to the development of robust MDT care plans in consultation with patients, families/carers, community teams, primary care, children’s services and other appropriate service providers
* To work in line with Safeguarding Children and Adult policies and procedures, including participation in safeguarding meetings when required
* To participate in clinical supervision both on an individual basis and team/peer supervision (e.g. Reflective Practice)
* To be a source of specialised perinatal mental health knowledge for any person requesting this, e.g. midwife, health visitor, support worker, carer
* To assist in the writing and delivery of training to other NHS colleagues, voluntary organisations and other groups as required
* To offer support and guidance to other team members
* To contribute to the teaching and support of students as required
* Maintain clinical records according to professional and Trust standards
* To attend and contribute to clinical and team meetings within the perinatal mental health service
* To contribute to delivering interventions to support recovery
* To work flexibly and provide cover in the absence of other clinicians within the perinatal mental health service
* To provide comprehensive written reports as required
Person specification
Experience
* Substantial post-registration experience including acute / crisis work.
* To have worked in multi-disciplinary / multi-agency teams.
* Evidence of achievement in clinical practice.
* Experience working with patients with perinatal mental health issues.
* Clinical and theoretical teaching in a range of contexts.
* Training in a relevant evidence-based intervention.
Skills and knowledge
* Knowledge of Perinatal mental health issues, relating theory to practice
* Ability to work independently, with sound decision making skills
* Effective assessment, intervention and evaluation skills ensuring the provision of evidence based care packages including risk assessment and risk management
* Sound working knowledge of the Care Programme Approach and Safeguarding procedures (child and adult)
* Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
* Knowledge and experience of clinical supervision and reflective practice.
* Evidence of practice skills in relevant approaches.
* Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, national legal frameworks.
* Knowledge of Adverse Childhood Experiences / is a trauma informed clinician.
* Ability to demonstrate awareness of current evidence base relevant to the area of practice.
* Experience of being a Care Co-ordinator
* Understands the national perinatal care pathways.
* Critical thinker, reflective practitioner
* Awareness of wider health and social care agenda relating to PNMH.
Training and qualifications
* Registered Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker, Occupational Therapist or other relevant AHP.
* Educated to degree level or above or the equivalent.
* Evidence of post-registration Continuing Professional Development.
* Master’s level equivalency knowledge, education, and skills training.
* Teaching and Assessing qualification.
