WHAT TO EXPECT
Materials Engineering and Product Sustainability are a multi-discipline department providing a specialist technical leadership and consultancy service to the whole business. Teams within the department comprise Metals and Corrosion, Paints and Adhesives, Product Sustainability, Plastics and Coatings, VIAQ, Analytical and Hazardous Materials, Soft Trim, CAE Core Structural Mechanics, Fastener Engineering, Perceived Quality-Materials and Materials Characterisation.
This role will be within the Metals and Corrosion Team. The engineer will lead all technical activities related to Castings. Work will include material selection, validation, and technical approval of materials for new programmes, supervision and leading of laboratory failure investigations, and the issue of technical reports to Engineering and CoC customers.
The engineer will also lead projects to develop and introduce new materials and technologies through cross-functional working with Research and Materials Innovation teams.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities
1. Lead all technical aspects relating to castings, including material selection, validation & approval for Commodity Teams, new programmes, T&PPG, Joining, Purchase and related cross-functional groups.
2. Lead overall technical coordination for Commodity Teams and manage all technical aspects of materials management for those groups.
3. Lead technical activities regarding materials input to CAD, release reviews, and RMDV2 requirements.
4. Write technical reports, specifications, requirements, test methods, DFMEAs, and design rules. Create and manage the materials Body of Knowledge in TRM, X Ray, and Realisoft.
5. Manage all projects in Jira and provide lead input for QBR/ABR planning, Market Place, and Showcase events.
6. Lead Research & Innovation projects from a materials perspective.
7. Coordinate laboratory failure investigation projects and test requests.
8. Provide a materials technical consultancy service for relevant customers.
WHAT YOU NEED
1. A technical knowledge/experience of cast components, particularly regarding mechanical, formability, and joining properties and behaviour.
2. Extensive technical knowledge/experience of metallic materials and technologies.
3. Technical understanding of fatigue testing/analysis, manufacturing processes, and CAE/FEA tools and techniques.
4. Experience in a materials-related technical role within a recognised industry equivalent to automotive.
5. Experience in working in cross-functional teams in a materials engineering capacity.
6. Experience in laboratory failure investigation tools, techniques, and practices.
7. An ability to analyse problems/generate solutions and achieve results, making effective use of all resources available within the company and supplier base.
8. Excellent organisational, communication, and project management skills.
