Job summary This job is available from 1st January 2025. Serving a local population of 475,000 people living in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, the stroke department treats around 1400 suspected stroke patients per year, with 700 confirmed stroke cases, and receives over 1200 referrals to the TIA service. The stroke team work closely with colleagues across Acute and Emergency Medicine, Interventional Neuroradiology and Medicine to deliver the stroke pathway including thrombolysis and thrombectomy. Over the next 12 months, the service will be implementing an updated clinical model ensuring delivery of optimal patient pathways in line with recognised clinical standards and the national clinical guidelines for stroke. The stroke service operates across the emergency unit, TIA outpatients, an 18 bedded acute stroke unit, 38 bedded stroke rehab centre and a community based early supported discharge service. This specialist doctor post will predominantly work within the consultant level workforce to deliver emergency stroke and urgent TIA care (face to face clinic). This will include reviewing patients in emergency assessment scenarios and in urgent TIA clinics, with an expected patient caseload of up to 10 patient reviews per day, in the senior doctor role within the stroke team. Main duties of the job ClinicalYou will provide with senior colleagues (as appropriate) a service in the speciality to the hospitals so designated, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and promotion of health. You will be expected to help in teaching aspects of diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases to junior medical staff and nursing staff.Out of hours commitment for this role will be an optional element in the order of 4 weeks' on call per year and 8 weekend ward round morning shifts per year. Time off in lieu will be considered in a 7 day service model where weekend shifts are worked. Any other duties with other agencies that have been agreed with the employing Health Board.It is important for the appointee to keep abreast of current knowledge/legislation and developments regarding his or her particular speciality. In addition, the appointee would be expected to participate fully in continuing medical education (CME) / continuous professional development (CPD) and to pursue specific goals.There is also the opportunity to participate fully in the postgraduate activities withinthe University of Wales School of Medicine.
