Job Description:
We are looking for an experienced Senior Composite Laminator, with proven skills in composites manufacturing, especially with carbon fibre prepreg for precision parts.
You will join our team manufacturing the Prime launch vehicle here in Forres, working with experts in the field to produce our state-of-the-art orbital vehicle. Orbex is a leading micro-launch company with our Prime and Proxima launch vehicles being prepared to launch from Scotland.
We are well placed to be one of the first operational micro-launch companies in Europe, with over €158m/£133m of project financing secured, a number of customers signed up, launch licence application submitted, and backing from organisations including UKSA and ESA.
We are a rapidly growing company with staff located between our production and test facilities in Forres, Scotland, and Copenhagen, Denmark. Working on cutting-edge advances in rocket fuel technology, Prime’s carbon footprint is up to 96% lower than comparable vehicles, leading to innovations in propulsion and tank structures.
Our state-of-the-art re-flight system allows us to recover and reuse our technology, with innovations in separation mechanisms ensuring no debris remains on orbit. We have in-house production capabilities, including 3D printing of complex engines, full-scale carbon composite fuel tanks, and avionics and software testing labs in both Scotland and Denmark. Based in Forres, you will be at the heart of this fast-paced, innovative company, gaining unique insights into building a new launch vehicle for a growing commercial market. Orbex is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to a diverse workforce in the aerospace industry.
Role and Responsibilities:
* Participate in the end-to-end process of producing advanced composites components and assemblies for the launch vehicle, prototype hardware, and test articles.
* Work with a growing team, ideally with experience in flight-certified composite manufacturing or high-precision industries such as motorsport.
* Material and tool preparation, trimming, fitting, adhesive preparation, bonding, and large component assembly.
* Support in-house and external testing and part processing as required.
Qualifications and Skills:
* Ability to read and follow detailed schematics, drawings, and instructions.
* Proactive team player with excellent communication skills.
* Adaptable and able to work under pressure with attention to detail.
* Basic computer literacy.
Essential Experience:
* Significant experience in a composites production environment, working with pre-impregnated carbon fibre components.
* Experience in aerospace, motorsport, or high-performance applications; aerospace or space experience preferred.
* Ability to work independently with process route cards, technical drawings, and digital instructions.
* Knowledge of component trimming, surface preparation, epoxy adhesives, fitting, assembly, drilling, and riveting of composites.
* Understanding of composite production processes from tooling to finishing.
Desirable Experience:
* Experience with medium to large-scale, flight-certified components.
* Ability to interpret CAD data.
* Experience with ultralight bonded structures, automated manufacturing techniques, and component inspection.
Personality:
Orbex fosters a high-paced, startup culture where taking responsibility, initiative, open communication, and collaboration are essential. Ability to thrive in an international, diverse environment is crucial.
Location:
This role is based in Forres, at Orbex’s headquarters near Inverness, Scotland, close to natural attractions and outdoor activities.
Security:
You must be a UK or European citizen or from a country that is a signatory to the MTCR convention. A UK BPSS check may be required.
Benefits:
* Competitive salary (£39,040 - £48,800)
* 34 days paid holiday including bank/public holidays
* NEST pension, Cycle to Work scheme, Employee Assistance Programme, Life Insurance
