Learning Support Assistant
Autism Specialist
Monday – Friday (35 hours per week)
£12.90 per hour
Teaching Personnel are looking for a Learning Support Assistant within the Cardiff area to work within a special school to provide support to young people with Autism. This will require someone with experience either personally or professionally so they feel equipped and confident to work within this specialist environment.
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work on both a 1:1 and general basis, depending on the requirements the school have on the day. For example, if your 1:1 is not in that day you will be able to support the Teacher in other ways around the classroom and school as a whole. If your 1:1 is in, you are also there to engage and build relationships with all children in that class. This is to familiarise the class with who you are and keep all young people in that classroom comfortable and confident in your presence.
What will the ideal applicant look like?: (The list below is desired, but not essential)
- A patient individual with a knowledge and understanding of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and how to support young people with this diagnosis
- An individual which understands the importance of tailoring their approach to each young person as ASD is such a wide spectrum. It will be essential for the Learning Support Assistant to take time to understand the communication style that works best for that young person to ensure they feel comfortable and confident in communicating with each other and building that relationship
- Has a basic knowledge of sensory benefits and triggers. For example, young people with ASD can become overwhelmed and stressed by things like bright lights or loud noises so intervention here might be required to avoid them becoming uncomfortable and triggered
- Understands the importance of consistency to ensure the young person has time to adapt and trust the individual they are working with
- Has a genuine passion for helping others and allowing each young person to reach their full potential, regardless of any hurdles or challenges – the sky is the limit and every child has the right to an education which allows them to flourish in this environment
- Has specialist training which relates to all of the above
