As Senior Biomedical Scientist, the post holder is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Main Laboratory. The post holder will be performing a wide range of highly specialised and diagnostic techniques to deliver a fit-for-purpose laboratory service. These tasks include analysis and technical validation to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, meeting service requirements, turnaround times, and driving continuous quality improvement and the development of the quality management system in the laboratory section. This requires the post holder to communicate with others including those of their grade, more senior staff, and clinicians, as well as maintaining adequate supplies of reagents and consumables. The post holder will also undertake analytical, technical, and administrative troubleshooting to ensure reliable service delivery. The post holder will be required to undertake their responsibilities within any of the sections of the department and maintain competency and specialist knowledge for the work therein. The post holder will be a laboratory specialist lead and lead a team, discharging these duties either working alone to departmental, national, or professional guidance and policies or as leader of a laboratory team to implement policies and procedures.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will join the Senior Biomedical Scientist team in the histology department. This will also include offering specialist advice to staff and service users, first-line staff management (including rostering, delivering training/development, and performance management), management of materials, and representation at relevant specialist meetings. An on-call service is provided which the post holder will participate in as part of a rotation.
The post holder will have significant demonstrable experience of working in a busy main lab area and will be expected to undertake self-directed learning as part of a formal development plan. They must have knowledge of all aspects of health and safety associated with laboratory procedures and will have a keen eye for detail and a desire to expand and develop the service.
All HCPC registered staff are expected to maintain evidence of CPD which should be up to date and relevant to their post. The Department supports training and development and participation in e.g. advanced IBMS qualifications would be considered where applicable.
