General Adult Inpatient Consultant Psychiatrist at Tower Hamlets Centre for Mental Health
(linked with Isle of Dogs Neighbourhood Mental Health Team)
This is a 10PAs position.
The post is within a well-established acute psychiatric unit spread over two acute gender-specific wards. The post is primarily aimed at offering inpatient care for patients for residents of the Isle of Dog geographical area (in Tower Hamlets) or for patients who are supported by the Isle of Dog neighbourhood mental health team (IoD NMHT). The appointed consultant would be offering clinical leadership and taking on the role as Responsible Clinician (RC) for patients. The consultant would be working with colleagues who take on similar roles for the Stepney and Wapping area (and NMHT) and the Tower Hamlets Early Intervention for Psychosis Services (THEIS). These 3 services share the 2 acute inpatient wards; each ward has a capacity of 19 beds: Roman Ward for females and Lea Ward for males.
The current model separating clinical responsibilities for the community and inpatients was only adopted relatively recently during the pandemic. The post aims to maintain still strong links with the community team (IoD NMHT) and the post holder currently offers 2 sessions of clinical care in the community.
Duties of the Post
The 1.0 Whole Time Equivalent (WTE) job plan will be developed to meet the needs of the service and is envisaged to include 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 2.5 PAs for supporting programmed activities (SPA). The main duties of the post consist of providing consultant input to the inpatient wards and Neighbourhood mental health team, including assessing and reviewing patients, devising management plans, and providing clinical leadership.
Our mission is to make a positive difference to people's lives by improving the quality of life for all we serve. Our values are: We Care, We Respect, We are Inclusive – so we are looking for people who live and breathe these qualities when supporting service users and carers, and in their relationships with colleagues in the Trust and our partner organisations.
The Job Description is currently pending Royal College Approval.
The post-holder will provide consultant clinical leadership to the service and will assume consultant psychiatrist responsibility for the patients aligned to their GP practice and looked after by the Neighbourhood mental health service. This includes assuming Responsible Clinician status for detained patients on leave and for patients subject to Community Treatment Orders. As appropriate, this may include taking a lead on compliance with the Mental Health Act and CQC requirements. They will participate, directly and indirectly, in the assessment of patients referred to the service and in drawing up care plans which will address the patients’ psychiatric, physical and social needs. They will carry out detailed psychiatric assessments of patients of the service as clinically indicated to allow accurate diagnoses and devise treatment plans (including pharmacological management of psychotropic medication) including the delivery of evidence-based treatments. All work is undertaken in the context of the recovery approach, which is emphasised across the Trust, placing the service user at the centre of planning and decision making. Good communication with the patient’s care coordinator and with the GP for the patient is essential. When a review of the care plan is indicated, the carer and any other professionals involved will participate in reviews.
