Since 1998 a divergent body of health law has been enacted in each of the UK’s four countries. Policy analysts suggest that this divergence may be due to the different values which underpin health policy-making in Cardiff, Belfast, Edinburgh and London. This project investigates whether ethical distinctiveness across the UK can be justified, with reference to theories in meta-ethics, developed by Alasdair MacIntyre and others. Taking Wales as a case study, it looks for the sources of these ethics in historic practices of health care delivery. It considers how these traditions can provide a means of evaluating and criticising, as well as justifying health law developments.
