Hours: 27hrs per week, worked over 3 days (to include Fridays)
Job Summary:
The practice nurse will work as part of the primary healthcare team providing Personal Medical Services to the patients of the practice.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Assist in and perform routine tasks related to patient care as directed by senior nursing staff and GPs
2. Cytology
3. Wound care / ulcer care / Doppler
4. Removal of Sutures
5. New Patient Medicals / Urinalysis
6. Travel Clinic
7. ECGs
8. Asthma Management / Peak Flow Readings / Spirometry
9. Venepuncture
10. Hypertension Management
11. Ear syringing
12. Routine immunisations / Childhood immunisations
13. Chaperoning and assisting patients where appropriate who are being examined by another clinician
14. Assisting GPs with minor surgery and coil fittings
15. Requesting pathology tests, for example, urine culture, swabs
16. Interest in Diabetes or Coronary Heart Disease and Contraception
17. Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
18. Maintaining and cleaning equipment used by the nurses and GPs
19. Maintaining GP and Nurses rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
20. Maintaining general tidiness and cleanliness of nurses and treatment rooms
21. Ordering of Health Promotion Literature
22. Ordering of treatment room stock
23. Ordering of vaccinations to maintain stock levels
24. Participation in administrative systems in the Practice
25. Maintaining accurate records
26. Advising senior nurse of potential problems or errors within a range of assigned tasks
27. Attending and participating in any Practice meetings when required
28. Occasionally undertaking home visits
29. Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post
Health & Safety:
The post-holder will help implement a full range of promotion and management of their own and others' health and safety and infection control as defined in the practice Health & Safety policy, the practice Health & Safety manual, and the practice Infection Control policy and published procedures. This will include:
1. Using personal security systems within the workplace according to practice guidelines
2. Awareness of national standards of infection control and cleanliness and regulatory / contractual / professional requirements
3. Responsible for the correct and safe management of the specimens process
4. Management and maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
5. Responsible for hand hygiene across the practice
6. Ownership of infection control and clinically based patient care protocols
7. Active observation of current working practices in relation to infection control
8. Identifying the risks involved in work activities
9. Making effective use of training to update knowledge and skills
10. Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relation to infection control
11. Safe management of sharps procedures
12. Using appropriate infection control procedures
13. Initiation of remedial / corrective action where needed
14. Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of health and safety hazards
15. Keeping work areas clean and sterile
16. Waste management including collection, handling, segregation, and storage
17. Spillage control procedures
18. Decontamination control procedures
19. Maintenance of sterile environments
20. Demonstrating due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
Personal/Professional Development:
The post-holder will participate in any training programme implemented by the practice as part of this employment, which includes:
