In this hands-on role as Head Gardener at Glenlyon Estate, you will work closely with the Glenlyon Operations Director and estate team to ensure the estate and gardens are well maintained and always looking at their best. You will develop and implement our long-term sustainable plan for the estate, taking responsibility for managing and maintaining high standards across all estate gardens including Glenlyon House, the Farmhouse, McGregor’s Cottage, and the surrounding estate grounds and landscape, while at times supporting the wider gardening and landscape team across Taymouth Castle Golf and Sport Club and other estates in the area.
In this important guest-facing role, you will help create exceptional and memorable visits for all members and their guests, and be comfortable delivering tours and hosting garden talks while being the face and expert of Glenlyon gardens.

Discover the role:
1. Managing the development and implementation of all horticultural maintenance requirements - weeding, pruning, planting, annual seasonal bedding operations, pest and disease control, fertilizing, watering, and general grass cutting. Ensuring the gardens and grounds are maintained to a pristine condition.
2. Coordinating and overseeing the design and layout of the gardens and outdoor spaces to ensure they look attractive, are functional, and practical. Planting, propagation, and cultivation of all plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers in the garden and greenhouse, ensuring that they are healthy and thriving.
3. Delivering garden maintenance work with the estate team in the upkeep of garden structures, such as fences, trellises, composting areas, and other areas. Assisting with hard and soft landscaping projects including preparation of ground, paving, simple construction, grubbing out, planting, including trees/shrubs, and other general landscaping.
4. Surveying, collecting, and maintaining accurate records of work conducted throughout the gardens such as planting schedules, maintenance records, and inventory data. Providing relevant briefings and formal reports to the Estate Operations Director with updates on garden conditions, surrounding areas, and estate environment, supplemented and supported with regular photography.
5. Managing and overseeing the budget for Glenlyon gardens and surrounding landscape. You will take responsibility for achieving and executing a safe working environment and culture by complying with health and safety, and other compliance requirements in the gardens and garden areas of operation including use of personal protective equipment, tools, machinery, fertilizers, chemicals, and safe working practices to protect health, safety, and welfare of all team members, members, and visitors.
6. Maintain an inventory of all the tools and equipment used for gardening and landscaping, ensuring that they are in good condition with parts or replacements ordered as required; faults, defects, risks, and ensuring any hazards are reported.
7. Actioning and keeping up to date all garden associated RAMS (Risk Assessment Method Statements), COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), and MDS (Model Development Specifications). Managing in accordance with Scottish Waste Regulations.
8. Implementing and developing workplace policies and procedures as directed by Glenlyon Operations Director. Recruiting, developing, and supervising the garden estate team of workers as and when appropriate – including seasonal and contracted workers.
9. You will be working primarily outdoors in all weather conditions and should be able to perform physical tasks as part of the role.
Discover you:
1. Previous horticultural experience in the same or a similar role and/or environment collaborating with a small team. A strong knowledge and vision of horticulture and proficient in the use of Information Communication Technology.
2. An up-to-date knowledge of Health and Safety and COSHH regulations. Experience of writing and reviewing risk assessments and standards of procedures. Ability to manage budgets and work under pressure to juggle competing priorities with minimum supervision.
3. A high standard of personal presentation and attention to detail with exemplary time management. Excellent communication, influencing, and people skills with a natural ability to build rapport and strong relationships creating an enjoyable place to work.
4. Understand the need to be agile and adapt accordingly to suit the profile of the business, including the ability to adjust working days and hours of work to meet business needs, as and when required.
