Torfield is a special school for children with Autism, Communication and associated learning difficulties. We are a primary school and have children aged between 4yrs – 11 years. We have two sites, one in Croft Road and the other in Parker Road.
As a significant number of our children have autism and communication difficulties, we strive to ensure that we have an environment that meets these particular needs. We use visual timetables, pictures, objects of reference and many other visuals to support the children’s learning. We also use Makaton signing and symbols to support communication.
Some of our children present with very challenging behaviour. This is usually associated with their autism or special needs, and we try to ensure a consistent and positive approach through the use of social stories, Individual behaviour and Education plans and a significantly modified curriculum.
Some of our children have sensory needs. An example may be that they find loud noises, bright lights, strong smells or food tastes or textures difficult to tolerate. We identify the issue and then develop strategies to support the children with coping with their particular need.
All of our children have learning difficulties and need a significant amount of support to help them access the curriculum. Some children have speech and language difficulties and we have a team of speech and language therapists who assist us with meeting these needs. Most of our children have difficulty with their receptive language skills.
We are a very positive and happy school.
