Job Details:
Job Reference: HCC620016
Salary Range: £26,918 - £29,616 per annum
Work Location: Harbour Office, Southampton
Hours per week: 37
Contract Type: Temporary until 30 September 2025
Closing Date: 21 February 2025
The Role:
This challenging but exciting hands-on role will involve supporting the Harbour team patrolling the river, enforcing Harbour Authority Byelaws, collecting Harbour dues and other fees whilst educating river users and visitors to promote safe, seamanlike practices and to conserve the Harbour’s environment.
Your duties will also include assisting with general maintenance tasks (both on and off the water) and supporting the Harbour Office reception team with administration responsibilities. As well as offering a rewarding opportunity for the longstanding enthusiastic mariner, seasonal work with the River Hamble Harbour Authority provides an ideal steppingstone for those individuals wishing to embark on a career in the maritime industry, where you will get to work alongside and learn from, our experienced patrol officers and the rest of the harbour management team.
You will be required to work in all weather conditions on a shift pattern that includes early morning, evening, and weekend rostered hours. You must be a confident boat handler, (ideally with experience in Jet driven propulsion) with a maritime and/or leisure boating background and possess a good knowledge of the River Hamble and its community. You will undertake outdoor physical work and therefore a reasonable level of fitness is essential along with the ability to swim.
Being customer focused, the role requires good interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written, the ability to remain calm, tactful, and authoritative when faced with challenging situations and the capacity to occasionally work alone, unsupervised.
An applied understanding in the use of computer-based IT equipment (including Microsoft Office applications) is desirable, along with experience of handling monies and undertaking general administration tasks (to including front facing reception service).
During the selection process, you will be required to demonstrate proficiency in boat handling and your local knowledge of the river. You must hold a minimum qualification of RYA Power Boat Level 2 (or equivalent), a Marine Radio SRC certificate and ideally, a valid First Aid qualification.
These are temporary contracts starting between the 1st April-1st May 2025 (*subject to completion of the onboarding recruitment process) terminating on the 30th September 2025. Successful candidates who excel in this temporary role are encouraged to apply for subsequent seasonal/casual/full-time positions where they occur.
