Role Overview:
We are seeking a highly motivated Lighting Artist to join our Firesprite studio, working on a dark, story-driven 'Narrative Adventure' with genre defining goals. Collaborating with the lighting team, art and cinematography directors and other members of the development team, the Lighting Artist will help contribute to achieving a high artistic and technical bar for lighting and the team’s ambitions for a game with outstanding lighting that is filled with atmosphere, tone, and mood.
Our ideal candidate has a grasp on the artistic craft and technical understanding of real-time lighting, has experience collaborating with others within a game development team (or a team that develops within a game engine) with a focus on crafting lighting, and above all else, possesses a passion for immersive gameplay and cinematic experiences, and an eagerness to continue developing their skill.
The role is based in the studio for 2-3 days per week with flexibility.
What you'll be doing:
1. Contribute to bringing the art direction pillars to life as a member of the Lighting team.
2. Create environmental lighting setups with close attention to exposure, value range, mood, and atmosphere to ensure cohesive and immersive lighting across all game spaces that work for both gameplay and cinematics.
3. Build compelling cinematic lighting setups that are true to the narrative intent and present an immersive visual experience.
4. Assist in maintaining and improving the lighting pipeline and contribute to lighting benchmarks and guidelines for the team.
5. Cross collaborate with team members including environment art, level design, VFX, cinematics and tech art to ensure the lighting content is cohesive and aligns with project goals.
What we are looking for:
6. Experience as a lighting artist in real-time rendering game projects.
7. Portfolio that showcases a strong grasp on the craft of creating compelling visuals through lighting, as well as a gamut of experience in lighting for environments and character cinematics.
8. Moderate production experience and good understanding with physically based rendering pipeline and production experience with lighting within a game engine (preferably Unreal Engine 4 or 5).
9. Understands the fundamentals of light, colour and value, visual compositions and photographic or cinematography techniques in relation to their application in games.
10. Excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
11. Strong collaborative nature, self-motivated, and open to feedback but also possessing a strong capacity to address both creative and technical problems.
Desirable skills:
12. Experience with DaVinci Resolve.
13. Experience with Blueprints or other visual scripting tools.
14. Experience with Shaders, Materials, Profiling, and technical aspects of game art.
15. Good understanding of HDR pipelines.
