Position
As a Laboratory Assistant, your role will involve performing routine laboratory tasks with care and attention to detail, enabling smooth operations in our facility. You will provide clean and sterile materials and maintain the tidiness and cleanliness of the lab.
This is a part-time position, working afternoons, Monday to Friday. There may be opportunities to expand the role to full-time with the addition of further responsibilities, e.g., the preparation of plant growth media and stock solutions.
Key responsibilities
1. Operate glass-washing and autoclave units to ensure a routine supply of sterile consumables, glassware, and growth media.
2. Source routine consumables from the on-site store.
3. Handle laboratory waste and recyclables, ensuring proper disposal.
4. Maintain lab cleanliness by cleaning and organising specified areas and returning items to their designated places.
5. Participate in laboratory meetings and training sessions.
6. Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).
7. Comply with company quality management system policies and procedures.
8. Prioritise health and safety, complying with company health and safety policies and procedures at all times.
Qualifications and skills
1. Ability to follow protocols accurately and systematically.
2. Attention to detail while performing routine or repetitive tasks.
3. Good time management skills to keep up with the pace of a busy research and production environment.
4. Effective communication and teamwork skills.
5. Proactive at identifying and implementing operational improvements.
6. Willingness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges.
7. Commitment to laboratory safety and best practice.
8. Experience working in a similar role, ideally in an industrial biotechnology laboratory setting.
9. Experience operating glasswashing machines and autoclaves.
10. Experience producing cell culture media.
11. Qualifications in Maths, English, and at least one science subject at a minimum of National 5 grade C, GCSE grade 4 (formerly grade C) or equivalent.
