Medical 3C is a 40-bed medical unit specializing in adult patients, with a strong focus on stroke recovery and cardiac care. This unit provides comprehensive care for individuals recovering from strokes, myocardial infarctions (MIs), congestive heart failure (CHF), and those requiring continuous cardiac monitoring for conditions such as atrial fibrillation or dysrhythmias. The care model emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating daily rounds to create tailored care plans that address each patient’s unique needs. Staffing levels are optimized to ensure high-quality care, typically with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4 or 1:5 during the day, slightly higher at night. This structure promotes patient safety, with particular focus on thorough bedside handoffs and continuous monitoring to ensure proactive and responsive care.
Duties:
* Participate and collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care.
* Effectively use the Standards of Nursing Practice and the Nursing Process in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of the patient.
* Provide assistance in planning corrective actions to ensure safety for patients and staff.
* Comply with legislation, organizational and departmental regulations, standards, and procedures related to occupational health and safety.
* Maintain commitment to self-growth and professional development by remaining current in knowledge and application of best practices through the utilization of appropriate research and literature.
* Demonstrate good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
* Participate in ongoing quality improvement and risk management activities.
* Maintain current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of services, appropriate research, literature, accreditation requirements, and implement improvements/changes as appropriate.
* Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* Current Registration with College of Nurses of Ontario in Good Standing
* BCLS Certification required
* Current certification in venipuncture.
* Telemetry Training
Skills:
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in effective therapeutic communication techniques and interviewing skills.
* Demonstrated clinical competency in planning and providing care for medically complex patients.
* Demonstrated physical assessment skills, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Abilities:
* Demonstrated knowledge and experience in effective therapeutic communication techniques and interviewing skills.
* Demonstrated ability to organize patient care demands and to set priorities in a rapidly changing environment.
* Demonstrated ability to use and interpret patient monitoring tools (telemetry, NIHSS tool, CIWA Scale, DKA assessment tool, and protocol).
* Demonstrated understanding and commitment to patient and family-centered care.
* Ability to work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
* Demonstrated behavior consistent with the hospital’s Standards of Performance and iCcare values.
* Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible, and reassuring manner, both in person and on the telephone.
