Job overview
Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust is looking to appoint one trained Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedics Surgeon with sub-specialisation in knee arthroplasty and knee revision surgery. The successful candidate will be involved in our mission to deliver the highest standards of care through our Trauma and Orthopaedics service.
Our service delivery includes care across Darent Valley Hospital (DVH) in Dartford, Queen Mary’s Hospital (QMH), Sidcup, Erith and District Hospital, Bexley, and Gravesham Community Hospital in Gravesend, as well as various community locations.
Main duties of the job
This consultant post supports general expansion and the repatriation of patients from London to the Trust, including activities from Queen Mary Sidcup. The post is committed to providing an Orthopaedic and Trauma service with sub-specialisation in upper limb surgery, particularly in Elbow, Hand, and Wrist surgery. The successful candidate must be on the GMC Specialist Register.
The directorate currently consists of 12 Consultants (8 Lower Limb and 4 Upper Limb) and is being advertised to meet increasing workload demands, enhance new developments, and support the current Orthopaedic service at DVH and QMS sites. The successful candidate will undertake general trauma service duties and participate in the on-call rota (1 in 8 weekday and 1 in 11 weekend). There will also be a requirement to operate and provide outpatient services.
The department is committed to the training of junior doctors, providing daily trauma teaching sessions and a weekly education session. There is a monthly audit meeting for presentations by junior doctors.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will participate in the consultant-led trauma service to maintain a high-quality trauma service, including early operative work and fracture clinic supervision. Responsibilities include:
1. Surgical work encompassing general orthopaedic trauma surgery, joint replacements, reconstruction, arthroscopic surgery, and a specialist interest in upper limb surgery.
2. Continuing responsibility for patient care in partnership with other consultants.
3. Participation in teaching activities of the Directorate.
4. Management and administrative responsibilities, representing the Orthopaedic Directorate in Trust committees.
5. Performing additional duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
6. Accountability to the Clinical Director of Orthopaedics for resource management.
7. Encouraging research activities as part of normal clinical duties.
8. Participation in postgraduate teaching of medical staff and undergraduates.
9. Professional supervision and management of junior staff.
10. Regular participation in Clinical Audit.
11. Maintaining an on-call commitment and providing cover for colleagues.
12. Ensuring compliance with national CPD requirements.
