An opportunity has arisen for Registered General Nurses to join our hard-working and dedicated team of Nursing and Medical Staff in the Emergency Department at Whiston Hospital.
The Emergency Department is located in a purpose built department within Whiston Hospital, has both Adult and Paediatric state of the art emergency care facilities and is committed to the ongoing development of its service; in supporting improvements within its service provision and we are presently building a new Urgent Care Centre.
The post holder is desired to have demonstrable experience in an Emergency Department, and should currently be NMC Registered with a General Nurse Pin.
An Enhanced DBS Certificate, with the checking of both the Children’s and Adults’ Barred Lists is required for this post.

Responsibilities include:
1. Contributing to the delivery of quality patient care by participating in and providing the assessment, planning, provision and evaluation of individualised care.
2. Assisting in the admission, transfer and discharge of patients in accordance with local policy.
3. Participating in the developing and monitoring of standards of care and other quality initiatives in a positive manner.
4. Fulfilling the role of the departmental triage nurse, utilising advanced skills of assessment, prioritisation, decision-making, risk management and communication skills.
5. Under the direct supervision of a senior nurse, coordinating activity throughout the ED, with due regard for the multiple and complex needs of the department.
6. Being caring, approachable and displaying a consistently professional manner.
7. Promoting the safeguarding of vulnerable patients in line with national and local policy.
The ED is located in a purpose built department within Whiston Hospital and has approximately 98,000 attendances per year. There is a dedicated Paediatric ED, Resuscitation Room and Emergency Assessment Unit all co-located.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Maintain Professional Registration.
2. Adhere to the NMC Code of Practice and The Scope of Professional Practice.
3. Ensure that nursing care is appropriate, provided and is consistent with clinical guidelines.
4. Actively participate in the prevention and control of infection within the capacity of their role.
5. Report and record any untoward incidents.
6. Assist in the promotion of effective communication with all staff, patients and relatives and other departments as required.
7. Have responsibility for the security and maintenance of equipment belonging to the ED.
8. Assist the Nurse Coordinator in achievement of key performance indicators for the ED and the Trust.
ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Utilise knowledge of hospital systems/procedures to appropriately divert/refer patients to alternative/appropriate services and pathways.
2. Ensure that the recording of patient care is comprehensive, concise and in line with the NMC Record Keeping guidance and Trust policy and procedure.
3. Ensure Emergency Department Patient Tracking IT system is current and reflective of patients in his/her care.
TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Facilitate the acquisition of Band 5 grade competencies and skills.
2. Ensure fulfilment of the requirements for professional updating and maintain a personal record for future registration purposes.
3. Participate in the teaching of students and the in-service training of qualified nurses and health care assistants.
LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Act as a preceptor for newly qualified staff nurses.
2. Deputise for the senior nurse where necessary.
3. Act as a role model to junior colleagues and students and a support mechanism for senior colleagues.
RESEARCH & AUDIT
1. Participate in research/special projects/audit as requested by the Senior Nursing Team.
2. Contribute towards the setting, maintaining and monitoring of standards of care within the Department by participating in Emergency Department audits.
