There are 2 posts available, which are new posts to support 2 new operating theatres that opened in the summer of 2024 providing 30+ new elective theatre sessions. They are available on a whole time (10PAs) / less than full time / job share basis as appropriate. These posts offer exciting opportunities for highly motivated anaesthetists to join a dynamic, expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust based at Whiston and St Helens Hospitals.
Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview. CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.

Main duties of the job
The Department provides anaesthetic services for elective surgery in: General Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Burns Surgery, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic Surgery and Gynaecology. The Trust has taken delivery of a surgical robot. The first robot assisted operation took place at the end of April 2022. Currently Colorectal, Gynaecological and urological robotic surgery is well established. The Trust is the only Trust in Merseyside undertaking emergency and elective Bariatric surgery.
The department also provides emergency anaesthetic cover for these services on a 24-hour basis.
There are presently more than 14 orthopaedic trauma lists, 10 daytime plastic surgery trauma lists, and 15 daytime general emergency sessions provided per week on the Whiston site.
The Department also provides a 24-hour epidural service for analgesia during labour, and a 24-hour anaesthetic service for obstetric emergencies including caesarean sections.
Surgery in the Trust is undertaken on both the Whiston Hospital and St Helens Hospital sites. These are approximately 15 minutes drive apart.
The appointee will be required to take part in the on-call rota.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC registration and on Specialist Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent at time of interview. CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* FRCA Diploma or equivalent
* Minimum of 7 years' experience in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care
* MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
* FRCA UK/Ireland
* MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification
Knowledge & Experience
* Stage 3 Training in Obstetric Anaesthesia (or equivalent)
* General Duties Anaesthesia (Stage 3 or equivalent)
* Experience in Bariatric or Robotic anaesthesia
* Stage 3 Training in Orthopaedic Anaesthesia (or equivalent)
* Stage 3 Training in Plastics/Burns (or equivalent)
* Stage 3 Training (or equivalent) in Regional Anaesthesia
* Pre-operative Training
* Advanced Training (or equivalent) in Head, neck, maxillo-facial and dental surgery Anaesthesia (or equivalent)
Skills
* Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
* Capacity to operate under pressure. Demonstrates initiative & resilience to cope with changing circumstances
* Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit within team structure within the last 3 years.
* Knowledge and understanding of research methodology in Anaesthesia
* Knowledge and understanding of the process of Clinical Governance
* Evidence of appropriate teaching experience within the last 3 years
* Experience of teaching medical under-graduates, operating theatre staff and other non-medical staff.
* Ability to teach and train postgraduate doctors in the theory and practice of anaesthesia
* Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication & capacity to adapt language as appropriate to the situation
* Evidence of achieving GMC standards to be recognised as an Educational Supervisor
* Formal training in theory and practice of clinical teaching and methods of appraisal and assessment of trainees in anaesthesia
Other
* Basic word processing, database, spreadsheet and presentational skills
* Broad awareness of NHS organisation and day to day management of Anaesthetic Department
