Job Purpose
To support the Deputy & Head of Finance in the delivery of comprehensive, effective and efficient management accounting services for the College of Social Sciences in the following:
1. Delivery of month end management accounts, forecasting and budgeting processes in line with set timescales.
2. Provide regular, insightful standard month end reporting and analysis for all core activities in support of delivery of KPIs across the College.
3. Support the College Finance team in driving a step change in financial awareness and understanding of underlying drivers across the College.
4. Continuously improve processes and procedures that support consistent, efficient and effective operations within a strong internal control environment.
5. Support the provision of an efficient and effective service to the College stakeholders for all financial and operational reporting and processes.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Month end management accounts and financial performance analysis
- Responsible for month end processes and the timely production of accurate monthly management accounts with relevant commentary for the College.
- Collaborate with other finance colleagues to deliver month end outputs in line with the set timescales; providing support as required to the schools.
- Provide supporting analysis on variances to budget and forecast and liaise with key staff and budget holders on corrective follow up actions.
- Support the development and implementation of a standard monthly financial performance reporting pack, providing support to budget holders in interpreting and understanding their financial performance.
- Ensure financial data structure is accurate and regularly reviewed/maintained through liaison with key stakeholders within the Central Finance Office.
2. Planning & Budgeting
- Support the preparation of the annual College and School budgets in line with set timescales, including analysis of designated areas of income/expenditure and impact on KPIs.
- Provide standard budget reports at school and subject level along with key stakeholder support on interpretation and understanding.
- Ensure robust quarterly forecasts at College and School level with full analysis and commentary on variances to budget; facilitate quarterly reviews with budget holders.
3. Finance and Operational Reporting
- In conjunction with senior colleagues prepare adequate and relevant reporting and analysis of College and School operational metrics and targets that align to delivery of the University's KPI's.
- Using analytical insight identify existing or anticipate gaps and opportunities not fully exploited to support the delivery of key metrics and targets.
- Work closely with key stakeholders across the College to develop action plans and support their successful completion to ensure achievement of key metrics and targets.
- Critically appraise the effectiveness and strategic alignment of operational metrics with recommendations on future improvements and impact.
4. Process Efficiency and Effectiveness
- Responsible for supporting business improvements on an ongoing basis which will involve the enhancement of financial reporting and processes.
- Support continuous improvement both at College and Central level across the agreed business areas in terms of reviewing processes to remove duplication and wasted effort whilst maximising service quality, efficiency, and effectiveness.
5. Training & Awareness
- Support with the development and delivery of a programme of training and support that delivers a step change in the financial awareness and capability of academic and administrative colleagues across the College.
6. Other Duties
- Attend meetings as required.
- Provide cover for key month end activities for other financial support staff across the College during periods of absence.
- Provide high quality and specialist advice and guidance as required on financial information and university policy.
- Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Deputy & Head of Finance.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
1. Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential
A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles, or, Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2 Qualified or working towards qualification with a recognised CCAB accounting professional body.
A3 Comprehensive knowledge of business processes, management information systems and value drivers of management accounting.
A4 Knowledge of Microsoft Office Packages.
2. Desirable
B1 Knowledge of Agresso Business World Financial System.

4. Experience
Essential
E1 Previous financial and management accounting experience within a large, complex organisation and qualified or working towards CCAB standard.
E2 Experience of developing business cases with non-finance professionals and presenting these at board level.
E3 Experience of budgeting and strategic planning within a complex environment.
E4 Experience of working effectively within a matrix organisational structure.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £40,247 - £45,163 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended (permanent). At least 28 hours per week would also be considered.
