Job Description:
The Role
A unique opportunity to join one of the largest aerospace engineering departments in the country has become available as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Aviation Maintenance Engineering. You will be part of a dynamic academic team that is dedicated to teaching aviation maintenance skills which sit at the heart of the airline industry. You will have access to some of the unique teaching and research facilities in the UK, including Rocket Propulsion Test Laboratory, Industry Standard Flight Simulators, 3D Design Studio, and a state-of-the-art manufacturing workshop.
In this role, you'll deliver and assess undergraduate modules in aviation maintenance engineering. Additionally, you will be expected to actively engage in applied research and industry liaison to enhance the University’s reputation for research-informed and industry-informed teaching. You'll also be supported in pursuing research opportunities that generate income, such as grants and industry partnerships, helping to drive innovation and growth.
Furthermore, you'll support students through placements, provide pastoral care, and take on academic leadership and administrative responsibilities. This is a unique opportunity to develop your research potential and professional practice while being part of an aerospace engineering team known for leading industry-informed teaching for employability.
The Person
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated individual with a passion for teaching and a background in aviation maintenance. In particular, the vacant post seeks applications from candidates who hold a Category B1 licence in Aircraft Maintenance (B1-Aircraft Mechanical Systems, Structures, and Engine). Additionally, applicants who have experience as a B1 type instructor from an airline are strongly encouraged to apply. Ideally, you should hold a postgraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related discipline, and a PhD in a related field is highly desirable. Equivalent relevant experience in the field may also be considered. A recognised teaching qualification would be advantageous. If you haven’t yet achieved UKPSF recognition, you will be supported to do so through our accredited Introduction to Learning and Teaching or Kingston Academic Practice Standards Framework during your probationary period.
The ideal candidate will bring practical, hands-on experience with student-centred teaching approaches in aviation and the ability to teach using a range of technology-enhanced teaching platforms provided by the university.
On a personal level, we are seeking someone who:
* Is passionate about delivering high-quality teaching through innovative, active learning strategies.
* Demonstrates strong communication and teamwork skills to effectively collaborate with colleagues and takes a real interest in supporting students.
* Is flexible, adaptable, and willing to contribute to other areas within the department as needed.
The Faculty
The Faculty of Engineering, Computing & the Environment (ECE) is among the most diverse in the UK, offering a wide range of subjects that encourage cross-discipline innovation. Our academics are experts, deeply engaged in research, which they bring into their teaching. Our state-of-the-art facilities include specialised labs, a public outreach centre, a virtual reality centre, a rocket lab, flight and race simulators, a renewable energy lab, automotive and mechanical labs, and new labs dedicated to electrical, electronic, and robotic engineering, along with an advanced design studio. This combination creates an ideal environment for practical learning for future engineers and an exciting atmosphere for academic professionals.
