About the role
Applications are invited for a Senior Research Laboratory Technician to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial. Your role will be to support experimental research within the Biomechanics laboratories to ensure safe and effective working practice in these areas.
We are researching and developing orthopaedic implants and surgical procedures, working across disciplines in a dynamic research environment. You will be a good fit for this role if you enjoy working with people who have different experience, helping them get the most out of extensive lab facilities.
We are looking for someone who is motivated to work with a broad range of facilities, including robotic actuators, materials testing machines, bespoke mechanical testing rigs, incubators, x-ray machines and optical motion analyses systems. The role will require work in containment level 2 facilities, working with human anatomical samples, bacteria and cells.
We recognise that applicants may bring deep expertise with regards to some, but not all, of the facilities involved in our research. Support will be provided to build on and expand skills to help the post holder develop into this role. We would welcome your application if you can demonstrate relevant core technical support experience, and an aptitude for developing proficiency with new facilities and equipment.
What you would be doing
* You will be the primary point of contact for the Biomechanics research laboratories.
* You will ensure laboratories are running smoothly and efficiently, and that the laboratory infrastructure and capability are operational and safe.
* You will provide training and instruction in the safe use of lab equipment, and assist lab users in research with cells, bacteria and human anatomical samples.
* You will facilitate safe and efficient lab work, including the management, preparation and review of safety documentation.
* You will coordinate cold-storage and disposal of biological and tissue samples.
What we are looking for
* You will have demonstrable experience of working within a Biomechanical, Surgical or other relevant research laboratory.
* You will be experienced in record keeping and safety administration.
* You will have experience of supervision and/or training of colleagues who are not familiar with the practical aspects of experiments.
* You will have expertise in one or more of the following areas: testing machines, design & manufacture of bespoke rigs, experiments with human/animal tissues.
What we can offer you
* Working as part of a diverse, friendly, and engaged Biomechanics research group.
* Opportunity to work and network with a wide variety of researchers, including those with engineering, scientific and surgical backgrounds.
* Opportunity to master new techniques, gaining experience with our broad range of facilities.
* Opportunity to learn about biomechanics, surgery and implants and become an integral member of the group’s research efforts.
* The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution.
* Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 38 days off a year).
