A vacancy has arisen for a Specimen Reception Area (SRA) Supervisor in our Specimen Reception Department based at Watford Hospital following implementation of a new Pathology and Phlebotomy services programme commissioned by the Herts and West Essex Integrated Care Board with services set to commence from 1st March 2025.
Main duties of the job
The role will involve performing routine preparation and tests, including basic analytical processes, accurately and efficiently under the supervision of a qualified BMS staff, bringing any unusual test requests or results to the attention of the appropriate member of staff. The successful candidate will oversee staff responsible for entering patient requests into the pathology computer system (WinPath and Helix) and carrying out clerical and technical tasks in accordance with sample handling procedures. Staff will be required to assist in handling and distribution of incoming and outgoing goods, equipment, specimens and reagents as well as managing the laboratory users Helpdesk.
The laboratory operates a 24/7 service so the successful candidate will be expected to help ensure there are enough trained staff available to participate in all shifts and to otherwise take part in both core and late shift working arrangements which will include weekend-working on occasion.

Job responsibilities
Main Duties: To include, but not be restricted to:
1. To ensure that the sample reception team is technically trained to agreed standards.
2. To manage/assess the technical performance/competency of the sample reception team and provide regular feedback to the Head of Department.
3. To oversee departmental rotas and ensure that staffing levels are adequate for maximum effective daily operation and encourage, support and motivate staff to deliver agreed service levels.
4. To deputise for the Specimen Reception manager as required.
5. To maintain your own knowledge and skills to perform the job as detailed in this job description, including actively updating your training record and reading the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) provided and making staff aware of their importance.
6. To maintain a level of service and professionalism as expected, by the company, of the jobholder ensuring that all procedures are documented and updated as required.
7. To ensure the effective ordering and management of consumables into the department.
8. To ensure daily duties are performed by staff as outlined in the SOPs for SRA and to otherwise support the HOD in developing and implementing new procedural guidance for laboratory staff.
9. To support the HOD with management of staff probation, personnel issues, staff absence and annual joint reviews as required.
10. To answer any questions from the sample reception team and seek appropriate advice where required.
11. To inform the HOD of any updates required to SOPs due to procedural changes.

Experience
* Scientific interest or some experience
* Previous use of computers
* Awareness of Quality Management principles
* Some theoretical and practical knowledge of pathology
* Prior supervisory experience
Qualifications
* 5 GCSE passes at A-C grade including Maths and English
* NVQ level 3 or equivalent (NVQ Level 3 is equivalent to 2 A Levels) or more than 1 year work experience in a clinical laboratory
Depending on experience Up to £29,640 DOE
