An exciting opportunity is now available for a Civil Design Engineer based at our offices at Lamby Way in Cardiff, for a period of up to 12 months, subject to review. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and skilled engineer to help us meet the needs of our EHV construction programs. The role reports to the engineering design team manager, under the guidance of our senior civil engineer. This is a unique opportunity for a civil designer, to work in an environment not regularly found in the civil engineering discipline.
The Engineering Design Team prepare electrical, protection/control, mechanical and civil designs for schemes to construct, extend or modify electricity substations energised at up to 132,000 volts. The civil engineering discipline is a vital part of this as we have an ongoing need for new buildings, building extensions, reinforced concrete and steelwork, groundworks and much more.
We are a growing team, with a culture of support, progress and continuous improvement. We are looking for an individual who can join us in expanding and developing our outputs, who is committed to the success of the team, and is able to take ownership and personal responsibility for their workload.
As part of our hybrid working approach and in line with our policy, this role allows you to apply for a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.
Rewarding success and development is important to us and as part of this role you’ll receive annual salary increases.
* The successful candidate may initially be appointed on a lower salary until all relevant training is completed.
Please note evidence of qualifications will be required prior to appointment.
Main Responsibilities
* The detailed design of civil engineering features, primarily substation buildings, foundations, structures, roads and drainage.
* Preparation of detailed engineering drawings in an AutoCAD environment; specifically 2D wireframe but 3D skills may prove useful.
* Preparation of specifications for tender and construction purposes.
* Discharging the duties of a ‘Designer’ under the Construction Design and Management (CDM) regulations.
* Ensuring compliance of civil design output with NGED policy.
Where applicants do not have familiarity with all of the listed areas, they would be expected to demonstrate core skills or demonstrable experience within a civil/structural engineering discipline.
For example the role could be relevant to candidates with a strong civil site & construction experience (with suitable recognised minimum qualification detailed below), or a recent Civil Engineering Graduate with a level of post study working experience in a civil/structural capacity.
Where applicants initially lack particular skills, appointment on a designate basis may be considered. Informal training and support will be given to assist the appointee to develop into the role where necessary. A proactive approach to their own development is expected from the appointed candidate.
Ideal Candidate
Candidates should ideally be qualified to a national certificate level or equivalent in an appropriate engineering discipline. We would like applicants to have experience in preparing and manipulating engineering drawings using computer-aided design tools (e.g. AutoCAD) as this is the main tool we use; however for a promising candidate who is able and willing to gain these skills rapidly, this may not be a barrier. Applicants should hold a full UK driving licence.
Candidates will further be expected to demonstrate customer focus, flexibility, good communication skills and an ability to manage a number of design commissions.
National Grid Electricity Distribution is committed to safeguarding the interests of the Company, colleagues and customers. This role is subject to a satisfactory Barring Service (DBS) check.
