Join our talented team at Nanoco, the market leader in the research, development, licensing and large scale manufacture of novel nanomaterials for use in various commercial applications.
ROLE SUMMARY
The Senior Synthetic & Materials Chemist is responsible for the development, synthesis, and characterisation of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs). This role plays a critical part in advancing the company’s R&D efforts by optimising existing materials, developing new quantum dot formulations, and ensuring high-quality output aligned with project goals. The successful candidate will lead technical work streams, support junior scientists, and contribute to the company’s innovation pipeline through IP generation and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Design and plan experimental strategies to develop new and existing quantum dot materials.
2. Analyse QD properties using techniques such as TEM, optical absorption and fluorescence techniques, powder x-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, FTIR, GC-MS, NMR and suggest process improvements.
3. Preparation and characterisation of QD samples.
4. Achieve targets of material quantity and quality within an agreed timescale.
5. Actively contribute to the company’s IP portfolio by submitting invention disclosures and supporting patent applications.
6. Play a leadership role in the team by sharing knowledge, skills and experience across the team to ensure best practice and mentor junior chemists.
7. Work safely and responsibly, ensuring clean and tidy workspaces, following company regulations (e.g. COSHH, Lone Working etc.) and proactively suggest safety improvements.
8. Meet with customers and external partners as required to promote Nanoco products.
SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES
1. Strong knowledge of synthetic chemistry, nanomaterials, colloidal chemistry, and organometallic/inorganic synthesis.
2. Practical experience with analytical techniques such as TEM, optical absorption and fluorescence, XRD, TGA, GC-MS, FTIR, and NMR.
3. Deep understanding of quantum dot materials, their optical and electronic properties, and their applications in display and imaging technologies.
4. Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex scientific ideas clearly and concisely.
5. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with experience using scientific software.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
1. Advanced degree (PhD or MSc) in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field, with a focus on nanomaterials, colloidal chemistry, organometallic, and/or inorganic synthesis.
2. Proven mastery and hands-on experience in quantum dot synthesis.
3. Excellent chemistry skills with an ability to understand Nanotechnology, experience with inert atmosphere techniques and nanoparticle synthesis and characterisation.
4. Experience in QD resin formulation and ligand exchange for electronic devices is a plus.
OBJECTIVES
1. Ensure all QD materials are delivered with the desired properties and within project timelines.
2. Maintain an accurate and up-to-date lab book, with all records signed off.
3. Promote and maintain a clean, organised, and safe laboratory environment.
