Introduction:
RNSA Moorings Ltd is a Company Limited by Guarantee that manages over 300 permanent berths in Portsmouth Harbour for the use of members of the Royal Naval Sailing Association (RNSA). They include a mix of marina, mid-stream and swinging moorings. Under its Articles of Association, the Company operates on a ‘not for profit’ basis and works closely with the RNSA, which is the Royal Navy’s Sailing Charity.
This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a small dynamic team in a varied role with plenty of scope for responsibility and initiative. The Operations Manager undertakes the delivery of the day-to-day waterfront activities across the mooring’s estate, with specific focus on providing a safe environment for both staff and berth holders to enjoy. The role offers some flexibility based on a core 5-day week of 40 hours, with occasional weekend working necessary. The moorings operation is run from Fort Blockhouse in Gosport, Hampshire. Working alongside and closely with the Moorings Manager, the Operations Manager is answerable to the Managing Director, who also undertakes the role of RNSA’s Chief Executive.
The successful applicant will have the appropriate practical ‘hands on’ marine experience needed to handle routine maintenance, safety and operational tasks as well as being able to coordinate wider activity and oversight in support of the Managing Director. They will be able to communicate effectively with berth holders and be their lead contact for all waterfront matters. They will be expected to work outdoors when required, undertake routine maintenance tasks, engage with contractors and other site users, liaise with berth holders, drive the moorings’ launch, scope and execute projects and oversee health and safety.
Purpose:
The Operations Manager is responsible for all day-to-day activities across the moorings site with specific focus on the delivery of a safe environment for both staff and berth holders.
Salary / Hours / Location:
Based on a Monday – Friday, 40 hour working week, with occasional work required at weekends / out of hours, the salary is £32,000. The annual holiday allowance is 30 days plus Public Holidays. RNSA Moorings Ltd offers a pension scheme through the People’s Pension. There is a 6-month probationary period. The RNSA Moorings Ltd offices are at: 10 Haslar Marina, Haslar Road, Gosport, PO12 1NU and the Operations Manager is based ‘on site’ in an office at Dolphin Marina (Fort Blockhouse, Haslar Road, Gosport, PO12 2AB). Fort Blockhouse is a Ministry of Defence site and basic security checks will be required.
Starting date: Provisionally 10 March 2025.
Key Functions include:
* Oversee designated projects to include scoping, obtaining quotes, liaising with contractors and ensuring effective delivery within budget.
* Identify work needed across the estate and help prepare costed proposals.
* Carry out risk assessments for all mooring areas.
* Deliver the implementation, oversight and reporting of the health and safety policy / processes.
* Act as the main interlocutor for berth holders.
* Act as line manager for any assigned staff, including the Bosuns.
* Ensure all mooring areas are maintained to a good standard with appropriate records in place.
* Oversee contractor support where needed.
* Show new berth holders to their mooring and deliver the necessary induction and training.
* Support the Moorings Manager with the security paperwork for current berth holders.
* Oversee the maintenance and seaworthiness of the launch and ensure it is available for use.
* Be the primary coxswain for the launch and enable a ferry service for berth holders.
* Ensure the Bosuns (predominantly cover the weekend work) are appropriately trained.
* Maintain a regular check of the security of the moorings’ estate.
* Manage the ‘electricity cards’ for berth holders.
* Manage RNSA Moorings Specialist Safety Equipment.
* Clean all pontoons at the beginning and end of the season and as required.
* Maintenance within the Fleetlands site at Vector Aerospace.
* Liaise with site staff as required.
Skills required:
* Have strong inter-personal and communication skills.
* Able to problem solve.
* Computer literate.
* Qualified Coxswain, ideally a minimum of RYA Power Boat Level 2, with a powerboat commercial endorsement.
* Experience of H&S policies and procedures.
* Able to assess and manage risk.
* Strong work ethic with service orientated approach.
