The Role
The School of Education, Communication and Language Sciences (ECLS) is seeking to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer based in Speech and Language Sciences (SLS). Within SLS, there is a diverse and collegiate academic team, with expertise in linguistics, phonetics and phonology, psychology and speech and language pathology, who deliver high quality education and research.
You will make a significant contribution to teaching and research supervision within SLS across both undergraduate and postgraduate pre-registration speech and language therapy, Health and Care Professions Council approved programmes.
You will have a strong research profile in an area relevant to our understanding of speech, language and communication or speech and language pathology. You will be an integral part of our research community, contributing to our research culture and excellence in SLS and the School and being part of relevant research centres and institutes across campus. You will, where appropriate, make a contribution to academic administration, management and/or leadership within the School.

Key Accountabilities
Teaching & Learning
1. Make a significant contribution to the planning, design, teaching, assessment and development of modules in line with the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Standards of Education and Training and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) Curriculum Guidance.
2. Mentor and support students throughout their studies in the role of personal tutor.
3. Ensure all our students benefit from studying in an excellent, research-intensive environment.
4. Provide education for life, that engages, challenges and supports our students to discover and fulfil their potential both while they are studying with us and once they have graduated.
Research
1. Conduct research that demonstrates international standards of excellence in terms of originality, significance and rigour in the subject area of Speech and Language Sciences.
2. Contribute to the research profile of the School of ECLS by publishing high quality outputs.
3. Demonstrate impact by developing research-based solutions to real-world problems and engage with external stakeholders to develop the impact of your work.
4. Supervise PGR (postgraduate research) students in a research-led university.
Other
1. Contribute to the strategic direction of School of ECLS.
2. Operate as an active citizen in the School of ECLS.
3. Be committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, to ethics and ethical conduct.
4. Take responsibility for a defined academic role such as Module Leader, Admissions Tutor.
5. Contribute to programme quality assurance and professional accreditation (RCSLT, HCPC) processes.
6. Contribute to the wider work of the School, Faculty and University through input to project teams, working groups and committees.
In addition, for Senior Lecturer Grade H:
1. As a senior colleague, make a positive leadership contribution to the School of ECLS community, such as Degree Programme Director, Research Director.
2. Provide academic mentorship and leadership to colleagues and students.
3. Attract as well as supervise PGR students in a research-led university.
The Person
The level of appointment will be determined by your ability to meet the requirements of the person specification as outlined below.
Knowledge, Skills & Experience
1. Specialist subject knowledge related to speech, language and communication or speech and language pathology.
2. Demonstrable ability to deliver high quality teaching that engages, challenges, and inspires our students.
3. Demonstrable ability to deliver high quality research in areas relevant to Speech and Language Sciences.
4. Evidence of potential publications in international and leading outlets.
5. Evidence of or willingness to engage with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research.
6. Evidence of/potential to develop and secure research funding and/or impact.
7. Ability to supervise PGR students.
8. Ability to supervise undergraduate and taught postgraduate students’ research projects.
9. Ability to engage with and respond enthusiastically and positively to students.
10. Ability to work collaboratively, constructively and flexibly within a team of academic and clinical colleagues, students and support staff.
11. Ability to communicate complex information clearly both orally and in writing.
12. Excellent organisational, time management and presentation skills.
In addition to providing evidence of your previous experience of the criteria above, to be considered for a Grade G Lectureship you must also meet the following criteria:
1. An established research and innovation profile and proven track record in publications.
2. Experience of applying for external research funding.
3. Experience of attracting and supervising PGR students.
4. Ability to undertake a management and leadership role.
In addition to meeting the criteria for the Lecturer Grade F/G to be considered for a Grade H Senior Lectureship you must also meet the following criteria:
1. Evidence of experience of leading and delivering holistic, integrated programme-level design of learning, teaching and assessment strategies, to deliver learning opportunities that engage, challenge and inspire our students.
2. Evidence of a sustained international research and innovation profile and proven track record in international and world-leading publications.
3. A track record of engaging with external stakeholders, generating real-world impact from research.
4. Evidence of skills in organisation and leadership necessary for undertaking a management and leadership role in the School.
Qualifications
1. PhD in a relevant discipline.
2. Recognised HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience).
3. Qualified speech and language therapist, registered or eligible to register with the HCPC and existing or eligible to be member of the RCSLT.
