Description Salary: Voluntary role Hours: 3 or 3½ days per month on average Contract: Initial two year period This is not a Wiltshire Council vacancy therefore please contact North Wessex Downs National Landscape direct for further information. A bit about us: The North Wessex Downs National Landscape is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). An AONB is a nationally important landscape protected by law. Each AONB has its own natural beauty and distinct characteristics that are recognised as so outstanding that they should be protected for the nation and future generations. On 22 November 2023 AONBs across England and Wales became known as National Landscapes but the formal designation, and the legal protections, remain the same. Who looks after the North Wessex Downs National Landscape? National Landscapes are living landscapes inhabited by lively communities of people. So, the care of the landscape is entrusted to local authorities, organisations, community groups and the people who live and work within it. National Landscape teams bring these people together, working collectively to conserve and enhance these special landscapes. Relevant local authorities have a statutory responsibility to ensure that development and planning proposals take into account the protected status of the area. All about the role: We are currently recruiting for a new Chair of the Council of Partners. Sarah Nichols is stepping down from this voluntary role next March. During her tenure Sarah has been extremely proactive driving forward our aim to become the first UK protected landscape to attain the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Green List protected area status, working with the Partnership to develop our strategic objectives and business plan. The Chair’s principal responsibilities are: • representation of the NWDNL at national, regional and individual local authority levels; • chairing the Council of Partners meetings, which are held at four-monthly intervals; • chairing the NWDNL Annual Forum; and • liaison between the Council of Partners, the Chair and members of the Management Working Group, and the Director and officers of the NWDNL Team.
