Ex Service Personnel Mentor in Schools
Our programme exists to recruit, train and place ex-members of HM Armed Forces to undertake the roles of Trainee Mentors supporting pupils in secondary schools across Lancashire. The 2025/26 programme has been extended to the spouses and partners of veterans and serving Armed Forces personnel. Our Mentors provide support through one-to-one sessions with pupils to address barriers affecting their inclusion, attendance, and progression. Mentors also provide a positive role model for young people who may be facing challenges in their lives both inside and outside school.
Each mentor receives a comprehensive training package which currently includes:
1. Effective Mentoring at Level 3
2. Safeguarding
3. Youth Mental Health First-Aid
4. Substance and Alcohol Misuse
5. Autism Awareness
(Please note: The full training package is under review and may vary)
Placement in schools is for one academic year. Our Mentors are paid an entry-level salary (calculated from LCC pay spine). The cost of the training package is met by the programme as is the cost of DBS clearance. This is a Term Time Only role.
To be eligible to apply for a place on the programme, candidates must be resident (or intending to resettle on discharge) in Lancashire, have served or be the spouse or partner of someone who has served in any branch of the UK Armed Forces as evidenced by discharge certificate or ID Card, hold Level 2 (or equivalent) qualifications in English and Maths, and be skilled in the use of ICT.
