An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated & enthusiastic individual to work as an Activities Coordinator Assistant on the Acute Stroke Unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and SPARC. The Acute Stroke Unit is a 28 bedded ward which forms part of the wider Sheffield Stroke Service. SPARC is a 30 bedded off site rehabilitation centre for Stroke patients.
The post holder will work alongside the therapy team providing appropriate activities to contribute to the physical, social and emotional rehabilitation of stroke survivors.
The post will involve assisting in the development, organisation and provision of one-to-one & group activity sessions that are well planned and safe for all participants.
The post entails working closely with patients and other members of the multi disciplinary team and therefore requires excellent communication skills.
The successful candidate must be able to use initiative and improvisational skills to meet the need of a varied and complex patient group.
We have 2 posts available -
1x Permanent 22.5 hours per week
1x Fixed Term 30 hours per week
Main duties of the job
1. Assist in the development, organisation and provision of 1:1 and group supportive activities and enable patients to participate as appropriate to their physical health and personal preferences.
2. Establish effective relationships with patients, using excellent communication skills to identify individual's interests, strengths, areas of concern/need and help them to participate in positive and meaningful activities.
3. Use motivational techniques to engage patients and encourage participation.
4. Co-ordinate and support volunteer participation in activity sessions.
5. Contribute to information-giving and provide non-clinical support as required.
6. Collaborate with colleagues to identify health and wellbeing issues for the patient group and to provide patients with access to appropriate health promotion materials.
7. Assist in providing ward environments in which patients feel safe, welcomed, respected and encouraged, and that facilitate supportive social interaction between patients.
8. Ensure recreational, craft and other non-medical equipment used by patients is maintained for safety and cleaned in line with relevant policies e.g. infection prevention, food hygiene.
9. Co-ordinate agreed therapeutic hospital-based activities provided by internal or external agencies e.g. art therapy, music workshops, and liaise with the complementary therapy service.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Maths and English GCSE C/4 or above (or equivalent experience/ qualifications).
* Additional training relevant to area of work e.g. Occupational Therapy/Physiotherapy/Therapy Services, Teaching, Counselling.
Experience
* Experience working within a health, social care, or educational setting.
* Experience working with stroke patients.
* Experience working with geriatric patients.
* Excellent communication skills, engagement and cooperation/motivational techniques.
* Ability to coordinate, organise and facilitate a programme of 1:1 and group activities.
* Improvisational skills and ability to use initiative.
* Awareness of safeguarding law and effective disclosure management.
* Able to communicate effectively with a range of professionals.
* Able to organise own workload and work independently.
* Proficient IT skills (Word processing, email, Excel and video calling).
* Ability to coordinate other individuals such as volunteers.
* Confident of own knowledge, aware of learning needs, seeks guidance as appropriate.
* Awareness of equality and diversity in line with trust expectations.
* Particular knowledge or skills that will contribute to post e.g. creative, music, physical activity, communication technology and design skills.
