This role is very fast paced with a wide variety of different tasks on a daily basis. This involves a lot of phone calls and general administration duties and also face to face patient contact as a receptionist where there can be numerous different clinics running at one time. You will need to organise and prioritise workload effectively in conjunction with other team members.
The Newcastle Breast Screening Service currently provides breast cancer screening by mammography once every 3 years for a catchment population of approximately 150,000 women between the ages of 50 and 70 who are resident in Northumberland, Newcastle, North Tyneside and Derwentside.
The service is part of the National Breast Screening Programme, which utilises a complex, computerised call/recall system operated in conjunction with systems situated in the relevant PCTs, Care Trusts, and Tyne and Wear Contractor Services Agency. The service utilises 3 mobile screening units covering 18 sites throughout the catchment area, and one static unit.

Main duties of the job
* Operate the National Breast Screening System efficiently on a daily basis. Making and changing appointments over the telephone. Accurately entering complex clinical and pathological information.
* Monitor the efficient running of the service on a daily basis by co-ordinating and prioritising clerical duties.
* Ensure that the team works to the departmental Quality Management protocols and maintains the National Quality Assurance standards.
* Operate other computer systems, e.g. PAS, RIS when required in the department.
* Provide clerical support for the breast symptomatic service.
* Provide a pleasant, welcoming and efficient reception service at both screening and assessment clinics, recognising the need for tact and empathy when dealing with difficult situations involving distressed or anxious clients/patients and relatives.
Job responsibilities
* To contribute to the effective operation of the call/recall National Breast Screening Programme as part of the multi-disciplinary team by utilising team leader skills to ensure provision of an excellent clerical service within the Newcastle Breast Screening service.
* To answer queries from clients/patients, relatives, GPs, and PCTs and other Screening Offices.
* To provide clerical support for the breast imaging symptomatic service using the Radiology Information System (RIS).

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
* NVQ Level 3 or equivalent or equivalent level experience
* Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
* In-depth knowledge of the National Breast Screening Service (NBSS)
* Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team in a health care environment.
* Good knowledge of Data Protection procedures.
Skills & Abilities
* Excellent keyboard skills.
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills appropriate to dealing with all levels of staff and the public.
* Ability to work under pressure and maintain concentration whilst dealing with constant interruptions.
* Team Leader skills such as teaching and motivational skills to support junior staff.
* Ability to cope with the flexible demands of the post.
* Ability to understand and follow procedures and policies.
* Good organisational skills.
* Adaptable and willing to learn.
