Role Purpose
The Pre-Construction Manager will play a pivotal role in the development and delivery of pre-construction activities within the specialist field of mechanical and electrical installations for data centres. The successful candidate will work closely with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure that projects are designed, estimated, and planned effectively. They will manage the technical aspects of pre-construction, ensuring that Sudlows' high standards are met from project inception through to the handover to the construction team.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
1. Client Engagement & Development
Engage with clients during the early stages of project discussions to understand requirements and offer technical expertise. Engage with professional teams to build strong relationships and provide confidence in being selected for PQQs, RFP & Tenders. Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential clients to secure future projects. Present Sudlows' capabilities in Data Centre installations and provide strategic input on project feasibility and innovation.
2. Pre-Construction Planning & Coordination
Lead the planning phase for mechanical and electrical systems in data centre projects. Coordinate with all internal stakeholders including design, commercial, bid, estimating, H&S, commissioning, planning and construction teams to ensure alignment on scope, budget, and timelines. Develop detailed pre-construction plans, risk assessments, and value engineering initiatives. Collaborate with in-house engineers and external consultants to refine technical designs.
3. Project Estimation & Budgeting
Prepare cost estimates and budgets for mechanical and electrical installations in data centres. Review and analyse tender documents, ensuring all aspects of M&E services are adequately considered. Provide guidance on procurement strategies for equipment and subcontractors. Liaise with the specialist supply chain to ensure smooth and effective engagement through the tender process. Provide innovative solutions and the latest technology to improve tenders.
4. Technical Leadership
Advise clients and internal teams on the latest innovations and best practices in M&E installations for data centres. Ensure all designs and plans comply with industry standards, building codes, and Sudlows' internal quality protocols. Provide technical support to clients during the bidding process and throughout the pre-construction phase.
5. Stakeholder Collaboration
Act as a key point of contact between clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams during pre-construction. Facilitate design and progress meetings to ensure smooth handover from pre-construction to construction. Address any technical queries or concerns raised by clients or internal teams.
6. Risk Management & Quality Assurance
Identify potential risks in the pre-construction phase and implement mitigation strategies. Ensure all projects meet Sudlows' quality standards, with particular attention to the complexities of data centre installations.
7. Reporting & Documentation
Prepare and present pre-construction progress reports for internal and external stakeholders. Maintain comprehensive documentation of project scopes, budgets, designs, and revisions. Ensure all pre-construction activities are fully documented and compliant with Sudlows' standards.
Skills and Qualifications
1. HNC/D qualified, Electrical BIAS
2. 3-4 years' experience - data centre project experience highly desirable
3. Proven experience as a Pre-Con Manager or Senior PM working on a range of projects
4. Experience of liaising with colleagues from operational to senior director level
5. Experience of consultant and/or contractor led services
6. Desirable experience - Data Centres or other critical environments Rail, Nuclear, critical power & cooling.
